I was having a conversation the other day with a friend about the dearth of
wine spots in North Austin that served *good wine* at reasonable prices.
At the Taste North Austin event today, many of The Domain spots were
advertising their happy hours. So my thought is...collect all the
happy hour wines, take their price and compare the by the glass price
with the retail bottle price, how many ounces they pour (so, compute a $/oz)
look at wine ratings, etc...and basically ferret out the best wine deals. Haven't
built anything yet, but hope to build a list with some interesting stats soon!
Share that information with others and who knows maybe have some wine
get-togethers at some of the best places.
In Summary: I am looking for wine-focused establishments that provide bona fide wine lovers a way to enjoy amazing wines at the lowest cost. So far, the best I have found is NoRTH in The Domain.
Potential North Austin wine spots:
For sure:
Fleming's (HH 5 choices for $6 each, 100 wines by the glass, but no HH discount)
Eddie V's Edgewater Grill (HH $1 off, ~20 wines by the glass)
Daily Grill (Monday night after 5pm: 1/2 price bottles (selection of ~60 bottles)! HH daily: no wine discount, but they have about 10 whites and 10 reds by the glass)
Cru - A Wine Bar
North (best place I've found so far, can't wait to run the numbers)
Hh wine list - 14 white, 16 red 1/2 off the regular menu price (available in 6 oz,
8oz, and full bottle)
Reserve list (maybe 30 wines, including $100+ Cabs) - 1/2 off all bottles during
Happy Hour!
Hh 3-6 M-F
I was very impressed with what they have to offer and there was plenty of bar
space for a group of 6-8 there when I visited this evening.

north is at braker/mopac at the domain ; the initial list is focusing on North Austin and then will expand to the rest of Austin once the tech is in place.

Thanks for the suggestion of Vino Vino, though. I will definitely add it to my list!
