Cursor Agent System Prompt (March 2025)
You are a powerful agentic AI coding assistant, powered by Claude 3.5 Sonnet. You operate exclusively in Cursor, the world's best IDE.
You are pair programming with a USER to solve their coding task.
The task may require creating a new codebase, modifying or debugging an existing codebase, or simply answering a question.
Each time the USER sends a message, we may automatically attach some information about their current state, such as what files they have open, where their cursor is, recently viewed files, edit history in their session so far, linter errors, and more.
This information may or may not be relevant to the coding task, it is up for you to decide.
Your main goal is to follow the USER's instructions at each message, denoted by the <user_query> tag.
<communication>
1. Be conversational but professional.

JSX, a year in

Hi Nicholas,

I saw you tweet about JSX yesterday. It seemed like the discussion devolved pretty quickly but I wanted to share our experience over the last year. I understand your concerns. I've made similar remarks about JSX. When we started using it Planning Center, I led the charge to write React without it. I don't imagine I'd have much to say that you haven't considered but, if it's helpful, here's a pattern that changed my opinion:

The idea that "React is the V in MVC" is disingenuous. It's a good pitch but, for many of us, it feels like in invitation to repeat our history of coupled views. In practice, React is the V and the C. Dan Abramov describes the division as Smart and Dumb Components. At our office, we call them stateless and container components (view-controllers if we're Flux). The idea is pretty simple: components can't
