Friend Camp Info

Some quick things about Friend Camp

from your admin, Darius

  • Friend Camp is compatible with any mobile Mastodon app BUT you will not have friend camp specific features like the ability to post local-only posts just to Friend Camp. For this reason I recommend using the web client (https://friend.camp in your mobile browser) whenever possible.

    • On Android this is fine because Android lets a website send native notifications. Just go to Friend Camp in your browser and choose "add to home screen" from the browser menu. It will behave just like an app and you'll get notifications like normal.
    • On iOS you can pin the website to your home page and it will work great EXCEPT there are no native notifications, so for that reason a lot of users on iOS use other clients like Amaroq or Mast. But I also recommend trying out friend camp without notifications at all! It's nice.
  • Please file bugs with me. Just DM them to me or @ them to me. I will add them to the Friend Camp todo list.

  • We have lots of friend camp specific features! You can read about them here if you need a reminder: https://friend.camp/about

  • We use Hometown, which is a modification of Mastodon, and you can read more about the most important features here: https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/wiki

  • I encourage you to use the local timeline! We only have about 40 active users and we are all nice. The biggest difference between this instance and other instances is how nice the local timeline is, I think.

  • You can make a local (friend camp only) post in the web interface by pressing the button that looks like a link next to the CW button when you're writing a post. I didn't come up with the link and it's not a great icon, but it's meant to mean "linked" or "unlinked" to the rest of the world.

Tools

  • you can log in to Bugle to send a DM to everyone on the instance from the @[email protected] account. Please read the rules, this is meant for announcing Friend Camp wide events like movie watchalongs or book clubs. If your account is set to not accept DMs from strangers, please follow Bugle so you can get its messages (if you want them).
