LX = lisboa = lisbon.

Lux Frágil - that club part owned by john malkovich - this looks a possibly fun friday night

Alfama - Wander around the back streets behind the cathedral, see if anyone is grilling sardines and pig out

Belém & Padrão dos Descobrimentos - has a café inside the monument itself, nearby is the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, bonkers monastery built when portugal was still swimming in cash from the new world.

Pavilhão Chinês - tuxedoed waiters serve cocktails in the back bar, toys, dolls, model airplanes everywhere, pretty unique place. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g189158-d2732937-Reviews-Pavilhao_Chines_Bar-Lisbon_Estremadura.html

1300 Taberna - http://www.1300taberna.com/ - amazing food, in LX Factory, which normally has lots going on around it too. might have trouble finding it, but its the one with 'hello world' written in huge neon lights in the yard next to it. bit of a trek out of the center though..

Sintra - day trip from Rossio train station, get the white knuckle bus trip up to the top after arriving, wander around the gardens or the palace. can go into the village itself where there is a modern art museum (or at least used to be, not been there in a while)

Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian - there's quite a story behind this guy, if you're interested can go read up about him. it's the foundation that provides the lion share of funding to cultural projects in PT, and their hq has quite an amazing collection of art nouveau lalique jewellery, and some dusty egyptian stuff.

Bairro Alto - can check out the shops here for flyers on stuff that's happening. if you're here late at night, dont make loads of noise or the old ladies who live there will start throwing buckets of water at you.

BEER

  • 'um imperial', normally 20cl. everyone drinks these.
  • 'um principe' - slightly larger beer (might be a porto thing, can't remember what they call it in LX, better check with fred)
  • 'uma caneca' - half litre of beer, very unusual for people to drink or ask for this.

COFFEE / BREAKFAST / 3AM PICK ME UP

  • 'uma bica' - espresso
  • 'um pingo' - espresso with a drop of milk
  • 'um galão' - long tall coffee with lots of milk, breakfast caffeine, PT version of a latté starbuckiato
  • 'meia de leite' - half coffee, half milk, can also ask for 'direta' which has more coffee
  • 'uma torrada' - chunky toasted white loaf drowning in butter cut in thirds
  • 'uma tosta mista' - toasted cheese and ham sandwich
  • 'um prego em pão' - small grilled steak in a bun, normally with slice of ham and cheese too.

WINE

  • 'favaios' - sweet muscatel type desert wine, normally as 'um favaíto', which is a tiny bottle chilled almost to freezing point
  • 'vinho verde' - cheap, cold, refreshing
  • 'alvarinho' - if you want to get blasted
  • 'ginjinha' - classic lisbon booze. cherry thing.
  • french wine - i am a foreigner, please double all prices
