Intro to Modern Software Engineering at Digital Futures

Agenda

1. Intro

Fill out the quick survey as we wait for everyone to join and then there'll be a welcome to the session, then there'll be a short introduction to Digital Futures followed by small group introductions.

Tasks

  1. Once in small groups: share your name, studies, why you're here this evening!

2. Main

First there'll be a short demonstration and then the time is all yours with your pair partner to start writing some simple code! It doesn't matter where you get to. Have fun learning together!

Tasks

  1. Follow along with the short demonstration of signing up for an account on codecademy
  2. Once in your pairs, nominate someone to create the account (the other partner can do this after the session!) and share their screen. This account is where you’ll both collaborate.
  3. That person should navigate your browser navigate to https://www.codecademy.com/ and follow the sign up instructions
    1. NB: There’s no need to pay for the PRO version.
  4. Afterwards, search for the course Learn JavaScript, and start it!
  5. Take a minute or to to read through the description, the instructions, and how to use the interface.
  6. Have fun!

Extension: Find and start the course Learn Game Development with Phaser.js

Problem Solving: If you get stuck, use these steps.

  1. Double check the resources available in your current step
  2. Google your question
  3. Use the raise hand feature in the zoom breakout and someone will jump into your room to help.

3. Reflection

Reflecting is an important part of the learning process and we'll do this a lot during Modern Software Engineer training.

  1. Once we've gathered back, share in the chat 1 thing you enjoyed about the session this evening.
