Updated the gist to include the nonce validation. Hope that's helpful.

I had the same thing - first because I didn't had the handler function "example_ajax_request" implemented correctly
After that, I got that error because I was using the nopriv when logged in (or the other way around). When following the code correctly, it did work in the end.
I can't get it to work. It's always returning Error 400 Bad Request.
- function example_ajax_enqueue() {...} => functions.php (in theme directory with path checked at line 7)
- js file (with permissions checked - 0755)
- calling simple-ajax-example.php
Error:
jquery.js?ver=1.12.4-wp:4 GET wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=example_ajax_request&fruit=Banana&nonce=ae030e8819 400 (Bad Request)
Wordpress: 5.5.3
Theme: Directory2 (AIT-Themes)
wp_verify_nonce( $nonce, 'example-ajax-script' )
should be wp_verify_nonce( $nonce, 'ajax-nonce' )
And your ajax request is missing method/type as post e.g method: "POST"
wp_verify_nonce( $nonce, 'example-ajax-script' )
should bewp_verify_nonce( $nonce, 'ajax-nonce' )

He's right!
Sorry about that. Updated the gist to create example-nonce
and then verify example-nonce
.
