DOSSEE 2012 Strong Ideas

Topics

The following topics have emerged from the discussions. Of them we are going to select one — the one that's most interesting, yet feasible. We need more specific proposals and more details to make the choice.

Tourist Companion

Explored by: Maxim, Alex R, Andrew, Anton Z

For example it could be: “A user of this system is a tourist that aims to visit as much points of interest (POI) in a given time span, as possible. He inputs his preferences and the software plans the fastest route to visit all of them within known constraints.”

Some of the core features could be route planning using well-known names for places, public transport schedule, or even real-time data.

Overhead Projection

Explored by: Karina, Dima L, Alex B

Yes, we have a camera, a projector, perhaps, Kinect. With motion capture and augmented reality, is there something interesting that can be done in this project?

Tag All the Things

Explored by: Andris, Anton P, Dima V

Borrowing ideas from the cancelled WinFS and active GNOME Do, considering Rands' visionary wisdom, this project is concerned with the building of an ultimate tagger (and recommender, possibly). The point is to index everything, tag everything with everything, and let the user search all that has been indexed and tagged. An advanced feature of this project is the recommendation engine based on the content of the user.

Homework

The following is expected from all three teams at this stage:

  • By Tue: There should be 3-4 persons working together on each of the three topics.
  • By Sat:
    • Well though out use cases, presented in any understandable form. You can use UML, if it adds to clarity.
    • Technology research, proving the feasibility of the project. What platforms, frameworks, and/or libraries are going to drastically speed up development? How are we going to do it? What skills will be critical? Will we be able to employ all 8 international students during the project, given their different skill sets? Don't forget that we would need to reproduce the whole system from scratch in 8 working days.
