I loved season 19 of South Park. It ended about as well as I could have hoped.
For those wondering: no, the overall theme of this season was /not/ that
fighting for social justice is wrong. On the contrary, it affirmed that seeking
to improve society is a laudable goal. Where it drew a line was where it was
reasonable; the point at which one's belief in their own righteousness has
allowed them to overlook their own faults and poor behaviour.
IMHO, what South Park primarily attempted to convey is that something to be
concerned about is the manner in which media and advertising wields our concerns
to create content that draws our attention. It distracts and twists our
comprehension, and subverts our efforts to improve society by driving a wedge
between us; all for a greasy buck.
There were other themes it tackled, as well. Whether we have the ability to
control our public identity or even if we have the right to do so. How the
media selectively reports what suits its narrative; even when that may mean
overlooking terrible tragedies. How traditional news media has all but
disappeared and has been replaced by promoted content, advertorials, and
punditry. The absurdity of attempting to completely sanitizing our language
and behaviour; as though there exists universally accepted values and objective
perception. How stupidly easy it is to get guns in the USA, how dumb gun shows
are, and how ridiculous it is to suggest that everyone ought to be armed.
And more. This season was stuffed full of concepts that, once you gather your
senses and take a deep breath, are well-worth contemplating. |
