Culture for Kapost Bonsai

Practical / Tactical

Be on time to meetings or alert an hour ahead of time if you'll be late

Meetings need a goal and a runner to get that goal accomplished

Defend your time from distractions and use it effectively on moving product forward

Prefer Slack over email over in person interruptions over a set block of time

The fun of implementing date support
After spending the better part of the month implementing date support
in RethinkDB, Mike Lucy sent the team the following e-mail. It would
have been funny, if it didn't cause thousands of programmers so much
pain. Read it, laugh, and weep!
-----
So, it turns out that we're only going to support dates between the
year 1400 and the year 10000 (inclusive), because that's what boost
supports.

101 conversations I generally don't want to have...

This list now exists over at http://juliepagano.com/blog/2013/11/02/101-off-limits/ and will be updated there.

I keep saying that impromptu, unwanted feminism 101 discussions are exhausting and not a good use of my resources. Then people ask what I mean by 101, so I'm starting to make a list. This list will change over time - I recommend checking back.

I highly recommend checking this list before engaging with me about feminism if you're new to it. It'll save both of us a lot of time and frustration.

Diversity in tech

Women aren't equally represented in tech because biology

Nope. This argument is bad and the science does not support it. Unfortunately, every time you say this out loud, you are contributing to cultural problems that do decrease the number of women in tech.

This grabs URLs associated with the people you follow on Twitter and then tries to scrape RSS feeds from the URLs. You have to get OAUTH creds from dev.twitter.com/apps to do this, and then register the script so that you get the access_token + access_token_secret. Rev 2 actually produces valid OPML. ;)
