Application Requirements

Undergraduate Degree

The program is designed for students with a Bachelor's degree in engineering. Chemical, mechanical, civil or geological engineering degrees are preferred. Interested individuals who have received their Bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than engineering should take foundational engineering undergraduate courses to bring their understanding of engineering principles to a level commensurate with that of a Bachelor's student. A recommended bridging program of courses is available here.

GPA

Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA to apply to the Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering program. A GPA of 3.3 or higher is recommended.

GRE Test

The GRE test is required of all applicant's to the Department of Chemical Engineering's graduate program. GRE scores must be sent by the Education Testing Services (ETS) directly to the University of Utah Testing Center. The school code (University of Utah) is 4853; the department code (Chemical Engineering) is 1001. The minimum GRE score to be considered for acceptance into the MS Petroleum Engineering program is 155 for the quantitative section; scores above 160 are preferred. Under certain circumstances, students can petition for a waiver to the GRE test. To qualify for a GRE waiver you must meet all following criteria:

A minimum of three years between graduation from undergraduate degree and applying for the MS PE program.

A minimum of three years of industrial experience in a petroleum related field.

At least three academic and professional letters of recommendation must be submitted with the application.

A resume/curriculum vitae must be submitted with the application.

For more information about the GRE please visit the official GRE website.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The TOEFL (or the equivalent IELTS test) is required for all international applicants to establish English competency. The official TOEFL scores must be sent directly to the Admissions Office by Education Testing Services (ETS). They must not be more than two years old. A minimum score of 85 on the internet-based TOEFL exam (565 paper based test) is expected. The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 6.5.

Applying for the Masters of Science in Petroleum Engineering Degree

The University of Utah uses the ApplyYourself system for all graduate program applications. To submit an application for this program, please click on the button below, which will take you to the ApplyYourself web site. After you have created an account on the ApplyYourself system, you can enter and upload all information required for the application (see below). As part of the application, you will be asked to provide contact information for three references. These references will be notified, via email, to upload their letters of recommendation to your online Apply Yourself account. They will also be asked to fill out a brief recommendation form online before submitting their letters. You are not required to send official transcripts to the University of Utah until you have received a letter from the Department of Chemical Engineering indicating that your application has progressed through the preliminary evaluations.

Master of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers a Master of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. This degree is unique. The key attributes are:

The courses are available on campus or via distance learning. Many of our students are mid-career professionals taking the coursework remotely.

This degree builds on relationships between the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI), and the Department of Geology and Geophysics. The Energy & Geoscience Institute is the largest petroleum energy university consortium in the world with membership from more than sixty energy companies with a pedigree of more than $750,000,000 of geoscience and geoengineering research over the last four plus decades.

In your career, you may change disciplines. For example, production or reservoir engineers may sometimes find themselves working on midstream (pipeline) or even downstream (refining) projects. There is a specific course providing you with background exposure to midstream and downstream disciplines.

You will often need to interact with geologists. To facilitate this interaction, you need to understand basic geologic jargon, exploration concepts and be able to identify geologic hazards that can impact drilling, hydraulic fracturing and production. Petroleum Geoscience, CH EN 6*** gives you critical background.

Engineering and geologic issues come to life in a 12-day field study program in Utah and Wyoming where you will visit petroleum engineering operations and solidify your geologic coursework with field examples.

You will frequently need to interact with stakeholders. You need to understand their motivation and understand societal issues that are prominent in any subsurface energy recovery – CH EN 6^^^ highlights key legal ad sustainability considerations.

Guest lectures and specialists bring life to all of these topics.

You will be exposed to key industry software packages for drilling, economics, reservoir characterization, reservoir simulation, hydraulic fracturing…

This degree requires a 33 credit-hour program of course work, including a practical field study program and a capstone project or thesis. It is possible to complete the requirements in about sixteen months (September through December of the following year). Course work consists of petroleum engineering and geology fundamentals and advanced topics; discussion of geopolitical, economic, and environmental constraints on energy technologies is also included. The program is designed to meet the needs of working professionals and is motivated by industrial, national and regional needs. | |

Program instruction for the Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering degree is the collaboration of faculty and instructors from the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI), and the Department of Geology and Geophysics. To meet the needs of local, national, and international students, classes are also offered both online through distance education as well as through conventional classroom lectures. Students do need to participate locally for a short-term summer field study course and one accelerated course, as described in the following pages. For additional information, please submit your question to the Department of Chemical Engineering’s MS Petroleum Engineering advisor at [email protected]. Additional details regarding the degree can be found in the Department of Chemical Engineering Graduate Handbook. | |
