# Collaborative sketching w/client | |
> This process should last max 2 hours. | |
The method was created by [Google Ventures](https://www.gv.com/sprint/) as a way to quickly prototype (or iterate upon) an idea. | |
There are bits of this process that I've found really helpful and use at my current place of work (Shelter). Please don't get too put-off by the cringey terms. Silicon Valley is so far removed from the rest of humanity that they don't see a problem with adults saying, 'let's do crazy eights' in boardrooms. | |
--- | |
*Why though?* | |
- It decentres the designer at the concept stage, which is good as everyone has good ideas, and stakeholders are the most knowledgable about their project. | |
- It helps get everyone involved aligned on what we're making. | |
--- | |
*Materials* | |
• post it notes | |
• nice pens | |
• printouts of relevant things (current work, existing data, any insights we have, etc.) | |
• example of iteration sketches | |
*Steps* | |
1. **Audit current product** _get info from analytics, discuss what works/isn't working, opportunities, etc._ | |
2. **Competitor analysis** _talk about things we like/don't like about competitors and inspirations_ | |
3. **Define user(s)** _whatever we know about them, audience segments etc._ | |
4. **Define a 'user story' (if appropriate)** _a user story is just a way to frame the problem from the perspective of the user and helps us empathise_ | |
5. **Sketching** _this is where everyone in the room can get their ideas down on paper. this is less about visual branding, and more about the content, structure, navigation, tone of voice, features you'd like to see etc._ | |
6. **Voting** _use stickers to vote on what we take forward first_ | |
I'll then use these sketches as a reference when coming up with something. | |

Sketching | |
• Choose the device: this gives me an indication of how you imagine users will consume it. | |
• Think about the future: things that might not be in this version, but something for us to work towards. This is your ideal vision. | |
