This guide is a derivative of the aforementioned Devuan/Debian guide, which is a combination of Craig Coonrad's Debian Gnome Minimal Install Guide and OSTechNix's Debian Minimal GNOME Install, so credit goes to them for laying the groundwork for this guide!

A minimal installation of Linux can reduce disk space and RAM usage, while increasing security and privacy by reducing it's attack surface. You can also increase performance by reducing time spent upgrading and troubleshooting.

Note

Enterprise Linux 10 derivatives are made from CentOS Stream 10, which is the upstream/development version of Red Hat. The main derivatives are Rocky Linux and Almalinux, but there are other commercial derivatives such as Oracle Linux, EulerOS, EuroLinux, Miracle Linux and Red Hat itself.

This guide will only work on those EL10 derivatives as it uses Fedora COPRs specific to that Enterprise Linux major release.

Currently for Enterprise Linux 10 and their derivatives, we are severely limited in desktop choices due to them dropping X11 sessions and going Wayland only with EL10. GNOME is the only officially supported option (unsurprisingly given Fedora/Red Hat and GNOME's alignment with each other) and KDE Plasma is the only other option currently available in the Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL).

The standard Devuan/Debian installation process for a GNOME desktop includes additional packages that may not be necessary or wanted by many users. This guide will allow you to install a minimal GNOME desktop, adding additional packages as needed.

Chromecast WiFi setup on Android without Google Home

With this guide you can use a bash shell script inside a Termux terminal on your Android phone, to connect to your Chromecast using it's WiFi hotspot and do the Chromecast initial setup, without having to install Google spyware apps.

Warning

This is specifically for 1st, 2nd & 3rd Generation Chromecast, Chromecast Audio and Chromecast Ultra.
It's not applicable for any Chromecast with Google TV, as they can be configured directly using a remote or keyboard.

How to flash a Motorola Fastboot ROM from Linux

Download the fastboot ROM suitable for your device from Lolinet and extract the downloaded archive. cd into the directory where it was extracted, as this is where you'll be doing everything in this guide.

Note

Lolinet's storage is sorted by the phones year of production and region. There is a description in each year's folder which will show you the codename/folder for each phone in that production year. You might want to stick to the Retail ROMs (starting with RET), either Global (RETAIL) or specific for your region (RETAPAC for Asia-Pacific) to help avoid carrier specific apps etc.

While this guide is specific to Fedora and it's EL derivatives, it can easily be adjusted to other distributions by substituting commands and packages as necessary (i.e. On Debian derivatives, swap DNF for apt)

1. Download the image and liveboot

The image can be flashed onto a USB with any software (like balenaEtcher or simply dd) or burned to a CD/DVD.
