Note

This guide is a combination of Craig Coonrad's Debian Gnome Minimal Install Guide and OSTechNix's Debian Minimal GNOME Install, so credit goes to them for laying the groundwork for this guide!

A minimal installation of Linux can reduce disk space and RAM usage, while increasing security and privacy by reducing it's attack surface. You can also increase performance by reducing time spent upgrading and troubleshooting.

The standard Devuan/Debian installation process for a GNOME desktop includes additional packages that may not be necessary or wanted by many users. This guide will allow you to install a minimal GNOME desktop, adding additional packages as needed.

If you don't know what the difference is between Debian and Devuan at this point: Debian is one of the OG Linux distribution

Set up a Chromecast from an Android or Linux device, without Google Home using castanet.sh

Chromecast WiFi setup on Android without Google Home

With this guide you can use a bash shell script inside a Termux terminal on your Android phone, to connect to your Chromecast using it's WiFi hotspot and do the Chromecast initial setup, without having to install Google spyware apps.

Warning

This is specifically for 1st, 2nd & 3rd Generation Chromecast, Chromecast Audio and Chromecast Ultra.
It's not applicable for any Chromecast with Google TV, as they can be configured directly using a remote or keyboard.

This guide uses the castanet.sh fork by @DavidePrincipi, which swaps the problematic nodejs dependency for openssl. Using openssl allows for easy use of this script on many Linux distributions, as a large number already have openssl installe

  1. Download the fastboot ROM suitable for your device from Lolinet and extract the downloaded archive. cd into the directory where it was extracted, as this is where you'll be doing everything in this guide.

Note

Lolinet's storage is sorted by the phones year of production and region. There is a description in each year's folder which will show you the codename/folder for each phone in that production year. You might want to stick to the Retail ROMs (starting with RET), either Global (RETAIL) or specific for your region (RETAPAC for Asia-Pacific) to help avoid carrier specific apps etc.

1. Download the image and liveboot

The images can be found at https://www.archlinux.org/download/

The image can be flashed onto a USB with any software (like balenaEtcher or simply dd) or burned to a CD/DVD.

Boot the image device (via BIOS preferrably as it is that bit easier to setup than UEFI and makes no difference otherwise)
