GREETINGS, NEW IPAD OWNERS. WELCOME TO THE FUTURE!
Here's my app picks:
RSS reader: Reeder - it's by FAR the best. Google reader integration
Twitter: Echofon or Twitterific. I really like Echofon, but Twitterific is free.
Ebooks: iBooks is great, does pdf well, free. Kindle is good too, if you buy things from amazon
General file stuff: Good reader is as close as you will get to "explorer/finder" on the ipad. It's not bad, horrible, horrible ui, but very useful. can display and store any filetype the ipad can natively handle and more. dropbox integration, also lets you download arbitrary stuff from urls and store it.
Dropbox: integrates with your dropbox account. very nice
Comic books: Comic Zeal is very nice, you can convert your pdfs for it, and it natively works with cbr/cbz files which you can sync from your desktop
Instapaper: Love, love instapaper. It's awesome. clip and read articles offline.
News:
NYTimes Editor's choice - very nice free nytimes app
ABC - much more useful in australia since you can actually stream stuff like abcnews24 etc
Wired Magazine (US$4 for an issue, compared to about AU$40 or whatever shafty price you have to pay)
The Monthly - wanky leftwing australian magazine, in e-form. not bad. again, cheaper than newsstand price
Flipboard - currently getting hammered, but when it works again, will parse your twitter and facebook accounts and create a "magazine" of links and pictures for you to read. Also can follow twitter lists to do the same thing, or a bunch of pre-generated curated lists of stuff. Very nice idea. Grab it now to look at the curated stuff, and sign up for an invite for the other stuff when they sort out their server issues.
Pressreader - i love this one. For US$10, you can read FULL print versions of just about any newspaper you can think of, from anywhere in the world. $10 gets you up to 31 issues. $30 gets you unlimited issues. I've been reading The Age during the election and it's amazingly good.
Games
Words With Friends - online scrabble. very nice. ask iain.
magic piano - not really a game, but awesome. check it out.
angry birds - same as the iphone game, still great.
... i don't really play many games on it.
Other:
Skype & IM apps - until ipad gets proper multitasking, i can't really recommend any of these. They work, but they aren't that useful until you can quit and have them stay connected. IM+ Lite is free, works ok.
AirVideo - great idea, stream any video to your pad from your local network. works pretty well, if that kind of thing tickles your fancy.
Time Zones - not an app, but a webapp, and it's great: http://www.macstories.net/ipad/everytimezone/
whew. that's about it really.
What do I use most? Probably echofon, reeder, safari, PressReader.
