The TTT server has positional audio integrated with the game using the Mumble voice client. This associates everyone's voice with their in game character, so it sounds as if each player's voice is coming from their player model, as opposed to everyone's voice sounding equally loud and in the same stereo position. We also have some additional integrations set up with the TTT gamemode so that if you're killed in game, you can talk to other dead players but those who are still alive can't hear you.
You'll need to set up Mumble and Garry's Mod with some specific settings to get everything working right.
-
Download the Mumble Client (free).
-
Open Mumble and go through the audio wizard. Make sure to do the setup for positional audio when prompted. Go through the certificate wizard as well.
-
Connect to a server with the super secret IP and password. (If you don't have this, ask a member.) Set your nickname to something identifiable, like your actual preferred first name, because you can't change it once you're registered.
-
Once you're connected, double click on the "GMod" channel to join it, then right click on your name and select "Register..."
-
Now go to your settings (click the gear icon), select "Audio Output" in the sidebar, scroll down to "Positional Audio" and set the sliders to:
- Minimum Distance: 6.0m
- Bloom: 150%
- Maximum Distance: 75.0m
- Minimum Volume: 10%
-
Next, select "Messages" and uncheck all the checkboxes under the "Soundfile" column. This makes it so that you don't hear a notification sound when someone changes channels, which happens when someone dies in game.
-
Next, select "Plugins" in the sidebar and check the box that says "Link to Game and Transmit Position"
-
OPTIONAL (recommended): Turn off text to speech, because it's absolutely heinous. Click the "Configure" menu, then uncheck "Text-To-Speech".
-
Click Apply, then OK. You should be all set now, but you can tweak your Audio Input/Output settings to work with your audio device if needed.
-
Install both Garry's Mod and Counter Strike: Source from Steam ($9.99 each normally, often on sale). Although you don't actually open Counter-Strike to play TTT, many maps and mods that we have on the server require files from that game, so you'll need it in order for everything to work right. If you don't have Steam or a Steam account, you should make one here.
-
Go to this page and click "Subscribe to All." This is the collection of mods we use on the server. If you have Steam open it should start downloading workshop files - wait for that to finish, then open Garry's Mod. (You may see the game downloading things when you reach the main menu still, just wait for it all to finish.)
-
From the main menu, click "Find Multiplayer Game", then click "Legacy Browser." In the window that pops up, select the "Favorites" tab, then click "Add Server" in the bottom right.
-
In the IP address field, type in the super secret IP address. Click "Add this address to favorites."
Before the next step: Make sure you're logged into the Mumble server and have done all the setup for it.
-
Click "Refresh" in the bottom right, then select the server that appears in the list and click "Connect." Enter the super secret password to connect.
-
Once you connect to the server, within <30 seconds you should start hearing people with positional audio. It might ask you to confirm a code in the Mumble window, just follow the steps in the popup window if it does so.
Don't forget to have fun, and that Mark is the jester.
