First I want to leave a note to say thanks for maintaining this list. For a long time now I have been using it in adaway.
Also the other day when I was setting up a new Xiaomi phone and I decided to run it through pihole (after installing adaway), I noticed it makes connections to this location:
app.chat.global.xiaomi.net
So I added an extra manual entry in my adaway blocked list. Don't know what it is, but you may want to consider adding it to your list?
Thanks for notifiying me. I've added it to the list as well as some others found here:
https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/calls-home-to-the-maintainers.43699/post-415420
Seems like it's not causing any issues. If anyone sees some problems with apps, please let me know.
@eboye hmm, I don't see app.chat.global.xiaomi.net, am I missing something? Thanks!
@skorokithakis thanks, added that one now ;)
Thank you!
Thanks for this!
Btw, I'm new to this and I've downloaded AdAway through F-Droid, however my smartphone is not rooted and I can't pick the VPN based ad blocking it offers. How to get rid of it?
Also, I want to know how this (list) works? Is it a tracker that do harm/invading our privacy? or is it provides us services? Or all of it provides services but at the expense of our privacy?
Hopefully there is a separate list containing some information about each item.
I'm not sure what you mean by getting rid of it?? AdAway can work in two ways, as VPN or as root.
As VPN, it will filter out the domains listed in those blocked lists as they are passed through a virtual VPN, not a real one.
As root, it would write all those lists added to AdAway into /etc/hosts file
The file structure of that hosts file is
[IP to map to] [domain for mapping]
127.0.0.1 is the localhost IP e.g. the device it's running on, so all these domains listed here would be redirected to the device which wont provide any content once it's pinged.
This list is aggregated list by me using wireshark and testing if by blocking those domains everything works as expected.
I'm not sure what every domain collects, or what apps are sending to those domains, most of it is encrypted data, so can't be exactly sure anyway. But based on domain names you can get the sense on what they collect.
Most of them are harmless analytics data, but some of them (as it seem so) do collect personal information and telemetry.
If I could prove that they collect exact data, I would certainly go public with it. I can't prove, so ... I used this list on my Mi Mix 2S with MIUI to block unwanted domains, but that was long time ago. I moved to Custom ROMs (EvolutionX) and now I'm using Pixel 6. So I can't even test it now.
Hope this helps you ...
After pressing the app, it presents me 2 choices, a root and as a VPN. I can click the root and it presents me some info, but the other one doesn't allow me to click it one as it seems like a static image.
I also have an off-topic question. Is there a case where a system with these kind of analytics or whatever you call it, collects a specific file on our phone/computers? assuming the system doesn't have any malware.
and the windows defender has a feature of sending file samples to microsoft, does it send the exact file? can they view it?
Thanks for your help!
I see that there's an issue on AdAways repo about this bug:
You can try older version than 6.0.3
https://github.com/AdAway/AdAway/releases
And yes, it can send files, not sure if they do
Just to clarify, you said it can send files, are you referring to analytics just like the things you have listed or the windows defender?
Technically it is possible by the creator of the operating team to get any file from the system and send it to some other server.
Windows Defender is AntiVirus and can't be compared to AdAway. AdAway is an app to block servers, it's a different concept entirely.
So from your first statement, it is technically possible that windows defender with a setting that has been turned on about sending file samples, and those "analytics" you have listed can get any file from the system?
I agree, I understand their concept. It just that I'm curious if there's a case wherein a system/software/analytics had get a file from users device.
I really appreciate your help!
@eboye Still maintaining the list...?
I found a few more after running my phone through Pihole for an entire night:
