When you've worked towards a goal in the past, what systems or tools have been helpful for you in accomplishing that goal? How could you adapt those same systems/tools to use while at Turing?

  • I have a lot of experience using Slack while both volunteering & employed in the political sphere. Slack is an amazing resource for communication that will be very helpful in keeping strong communication between students and other students, as well as student and instructors/mentors. I find that both one on one meetings, as well as team/staff meetings are vitally important for making sure that things which may get lost between schedules/shifts are brought to attention.

As you start this new career, what is one of your strengths and how do you know?

  • I have spent my entire working career as part of a team. Whether it is as a server in a pooled-tip environment, a cook in the back of house, or as a team of people invested in making sure our political system represents the many as opposed to the few. I bring a positive attitude and I try to encourage that same attitude with my coworkers/teammates. I am the sort of person who will stay late or pull an all-nighter to make sure that the work is done and is done perfectly. I hate when corners are cut and something looks or works poorly because of it.

Describe how you work best (conditions, environment, preferences, etc.): -I've never had a desk job before, but I do know that I like to listen to music and have a comfortable chair when I'm working on a sitting project at home. Ideally I can work with something like the POM technique I've learned about at Turing because I like to take breaks to see the sunshine and squirrels outside my window. I like to take 5 minutes to wash a few dishes or start a load of laundry. I need soft lighting and preferably some plants or flowers. Fidget toys are always appreciated!

As you start this new career, what is your greatest area of improvement when it comes to your professional skills?

  • I have struggled all my life with sleep and that makes me the person that you can always count on to be awake too late and answering texts or calls, but perpetually 5 minutes late wherever I go. This is part of the reason I stayed in the service industry for so long; it allowed for a late night schedule that meant I was able to sleep in and stay up late. Turing will help acclimate me to a more typical 9 to 5 schedule, and I really want to be able to acheive that normalacy in my life.

How will developing a deeper understanding of your strengths and working preferences benefit you as a software developer?

  • If I understand my strengths and working preferences, then I will know what to look for when hunting for a job. Finding a good fit with an employer is incredibly important.

Describe the vision you currently have for your career after Turing:

  • I have a dream of spending the next 5 or so years working in the Denver area and building up my skillset. I would prefer to work for a non-profit, or a company whose values closely align with my own. After 5 years, my son will have graduated high school, and either alone, or with him by my side, I would like to travel. Other than visiting family in Canada, I've never been outside of the United States, and I think a career in software development could allow me to easily work anywhere in the world.
