In order for VNC to work from Mac OS, you must disable encryption.
- (In Ubuntu 17.20) Open Settings>Sharing
- In the UI, enable VNC access and set a password
- NB: ensure you toggle "Wired connection 1" to ON in the Screen Sharing preference pane.
