A Short IPv6 Guide for Home IPv4 Admins

This guide is for homelab admins who understand IPv4s well but find setting up IPv6 hard or annoying because things work differently. In some ways, managing an IPv6 network can be simpler than IPv4, one just needs to learn some new concepts and discard some old ones.

Let’s begin.

First of all, there are some concepts that one must unlearn from ipv4:

Concept 1

Boot Linux or OpenBSD on the PowerBook G4 (PowerPC/ppc32)

Use an older USB 2.0 stick, newer ones will most certainly not work.

Create a fresh Windows 10 Pro ISO file with Microsofts Media Creation Tool. (I created a Windows 10 Pro 64 bit German ISO image)

Save the created image on your SmartOS global zone.

cp ... /zones/Windows10_64de.iso

Installing Arch Linux AArch64 on the NanoPi R2S

There is current no support for the NanoPi R2S in ArchLinuxArm, but it's possible to run it using the generic aarch64 installation.

Prepare sd-card/image

Copy bootloader and uBoot from an armbian image using for the NanoPi R2S using dd (sectors 32 to 32767) everything before the partition, except the partition table).
Create an ext4 partition on /dev/mmcblk0p1 at offset of 32768 sectors (16384 KiB):

Steps

1. Download and Install

Download the ISO here:
https://software-download.microsoft.com/download/sg/17763.379.190312-0539.rs5_release_svc_refresh_SERVER_EVAL_x64FRE_en-us.iso
Flash it using WoeUSB on Linux or Rufus on Windows.
Follow the installation steps.

2. Change the Edition

You should be able to change the edition using DISM.
