macOS man page entries for launchctl services

This list was auto-generated on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) using a script that did the following:

  1. grabbed the name of all the .plist files located in the 5 folders used by launchctl:
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by the user.
  • /Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by the administrator.
  • /Library/LaunchDaemons System wide daemons provided by the administrator.
  • /System/Library/LaunchAgents OS X Per-user agents.

Raku's "core"

Then mathematical neatness became a goal and led to pruning some features from the core of the language.

— John McCarthy, History of Lisp

If you prefer programming languages with a tidy and tiny core, you're in for a treat. This article drills down to the singleton primitive at the heart of Raku's metamodel ("model of a model") of a model of computation ("how units of computations, memories, and communications are organized")1.

The reason I've written this article

It began with u/faiface's reddit post/thread "I'm impressed with Raku"2. One of their sentences in particular stood out for me:

Files installed by Zoom for mac OS

The Zoom install package for macOS is mad. Rather than actually using the installer to install things, it does everything in the preinstall script. That's bonkers, and also means that the system won't have a list of the files it installed, because it's doing it using shell script.

The script appears to install two items, namely:

/Applications/zoom.us.app
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ZoomUsPlugIn.plugin

If the user opening the package isn't an administrator, it looks like it will install the app in the user's home folder instead. If they are an administrator, Zoom will delete the ZoomUsPlugIn.plugin from /Library if it's there, but it still installs to ~/Library.

It also adds Zoom to your Dock automatically, without asking.

Most complete list of free email provider domains. Some of these are probably not around anymore. I've combined a dozen lists from around the web. Current "major providers" should all be in here as of the date this is created. I also created a service for it https://emailprovider.yonetic.im/ and use this list in my free link shortener service ht…

Exclude vcs (git, svn, hg) and node_modules from Backblaze backups on Mac

Backblaze's bztransmit process loads a file called bzfileids.dat into RAM. This file is a list of all files Backblaze has previously uploaded, including a unique identifier for each file. On most systems, this files is under 100MB in size (paraphrased from Backblaze support rep Zack).

Mine had grown to 6GB. This means that anytime bztransmit runs, it will load this 6GB file into RAM while it is backing up. In doing so it was purging massive ammounts of memory causing behavior like Chrome (usign 10GB of memory on it's own) to hang/beachball for 30 seconds and then refresh all it's windows.

There is no way to alter this behavior once it's begun, aside from starting over with some files excluded. The index needs to be rebuilt from scratch without the excessibe file count, that also means you can't restart and "inherit" a previous backup.

In my case the biggest culprits were .git and node_modules, so I excluded those, started a new backup (transfered licnese) and spent a week hunting for fast internet I could

Exclude node_modules and .git from Backblaze backups on Mac

  1. Edit the file at /Library/Backblaze.bzpkg/bzdata/bzexcluderules_editable.xml.
  2. Add these rules inside the bzexclusions tag:
<!-- Exclude node_modules. -->
<excludefname_rule plat="mac" osVers="*"  ruleIsOptional="t" skipFirstCharThenStartsWith="users/" contains_1="/node_modules/" contains_2="*" doesNotContain="*" endsWith="*" hasFileExtension="*" />
