Write 1-2 paragraphs about your StrengthsFinder themes: How have you seen yourself using these strengths at Turing? Has your understanding of these strengths changed since you first reflected on them? If so, how?
- I am a problem solver that is energized by the journey of ignorance to confidence. My instinct to persevere allows me to move forward through mistakes and through life's distractions. At Turing, I find that my desire to learn and my discipline serve me very well. I experience struggle on a daily basis, but my discipline and love for learning help me to maintain progress and productivity through the discomfort of the unknown. My understanding of my strengths has created more awareness around how I can contribute to a team and engage in a rigorous environment. It also gives me a toolbox to draw from when facing adversity.
Write a story about your Turing experience so far: When have you struggled? How have you dealt with struggle? When have you succeeded at Turing? How did you accomplish those successes?
- In a short 5 weeks, Turing has been a transformative experience. I am out of my comfort zone on a regular basis, and find myself continuously strengthening my problem solving skills and ability to push through the walls I inevitably hit. In order to be successful, I am forced to challenge my own expectations of who I am as a learner and open myself to a level of vulnerability I am not accustom to. A willingness to ackowledge what you don't know can be humbling. I have found that this willingness is directly related to my success at Turing. Trying to tackle Turing on my own wouldn't be viable. I am confident that human capital is an essential resource when trying to tackle a steep learning curve.
Answer the question: how does your Turing story end? Create a vision for your future and your career transition into being a junior developer.
- My vision, post Turing, is one of success and confidence. I expect to leave Turing as a competent developer, whose strengths stem from effective problem solving and logic skills. As a junior developer, my goals are to find an employer that has the same fundamental values as Turing and knows the importance of continuous professional development. A large part of my transition into a developer stems from a desire to never stop learning and always have room to grow in my career. Ultimately, My Turing story will probably never end. Turing has built a community that values diversity and failure, to me this is priceless and a network I plan to stay connected with.
After you practice storytelling in the session, answer this question:
What was particularly easy or difficult about telling your story? What are 1-2 steps that you can take to continue to improve your abilities to tell your story, talk about yourself with ease, and examine your strengths?
- It can be challenging for me to talk about myself. I enjoy publicly celebrating the growth and success of others, but when I start to talk about myself, I find that embarassement and fear of an ego take over. This often results in self-depricating comments or words that are counter-productive. Honestly, in order to improve my ability to tell my story, I need to be nicer to myself on a regular basis. I focus more on what I haven't done or what I haven't learned, rather than what I have learned and what I can do. This is a commitment I am willing to make to myself in order to fulfill the vision I have set for when I leave Turing.
