Getting started:
* Copy blocksync.py to the home directory on the remote host
* Make sure your remote user can either sudo or is root itself.
* Make sure your local user can ssh to the remote host
* Invoke:
sudo python blocksync.py /dev/source user@remotehost /dev/dest

Attention the original code eats your data !!

This git fixes a major flaw.
If your device size is not an exact multiple of your choosen blocksize the following happens:

  • the last fragment at the end of the source device is not written to the destination device at the correct offset
  • this fragment is written at [EOF - blocksize] instead of [EOF - fragment size] onto the destination device

orignal:
if res != SAME:
newblock = sys.stdin.read(blocksize)
f.seek(-blocksize, 1)
f.write(newblock)

fixed:
if res != SAME:
newblock = sys.stdin.read(blocksize)
f.seek(-len(newblock), 1)
f.write(newblock)

Further improvments:

  • use sha1 instead of adler32 (
  • correctly show the last operation status
    It is very confusing if the program stops with 1450 of 1480 blocks transferred - I've spend two searching for the lost blocks - only the ouptput was wrong - the blocks were transferred
