Davinci Resolve Nvidia on Linux / Ubuntu / Kubuntu 24.04 25.04

• Install
  • Download https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve
  • SKIP_PACKAGE_CHECK=1 ./DaVinci_Resolve_20.0b2_Linux.run
• Remove old built-in libraries sudo rm -r /opt/resolve/libs/libgio* ; rm -r /opt/resolve/libs/libglib* ; rm -r /opt/resolve/libs/libgmodule* ; rm -r /opt/resolve/libs/libgobject*
• Restore control bars on KDE Window Rules ➡️ Description / Class: resolve ➡️ Appearance & fixes: No titlebar and frame = NO ➡️ Force On
• No sound? sudo apt install pipewire-alsa Reboot.
• No .mp4 rendering (h.264 / h.265) ? Microsoft / Apple license these. Free: No ): Studio: Yes.
  • Studio: Awesome NVENC accellerated AV1 support in .MP4 using 4000+ series Nvidia on Linux.
• No AAC ? No Linux version has this.
• Error: Your GPU Memory is Full? __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia /opt/resolve/bin/resolve
• Need to refresh config? ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve

Resolve vs Premiere:

• No motion blur on Transform. Need to add it manually. Premiere has the easiest motion blur of any editor.
• More clunky UI.

Other Editors (Wider codec support without Studio. Better integration)

• 🟢 CapCut is $ but really easy and capable and works on Linux (web).
  • A metric ton of great presets- but no keyframing, no motion blur.
• 🟢 Olive is on hiatus going into v3, but also has a very promising future on Godot
• 🟢 Blender 4.5+ promising future because 3D compositor, inherits animation system, but currently lacks:
  • Audio effects (pitch, reverb being big ones).
  • Motion blur without complex node setup.

• Wondershare Filmora is windows only.
  • No effect layers.
• KDenLive, can use hardware encode.
  • Janky AF compared to Premiere, Davinci, Capcut.

• Openshot 3.3+ can use hardware encode, modern formats.
  • Real basic editing its fine but transitions and effects are trash.
• Shotcut, can use hardware encode.
  • Nice effects: glitch, fisheye, scan lines.
  • Otherwise, everything is an effect and difficult to use.

Why not Adobe?

• Wine. 🟢 Premiere CS6 runs in Wine 8/9/10
  • Premiere CC 2013 boots up, no GUI.
  • CC 2013, CC 2014, CC 2015 red boxes. No matter what dependencies or Wine version is used.
  • CS6 still has light-only UI?
• Dual boot Windows, unencrypted.
  • 🟢 Lets you re-use hardware / desk.
  • 🟢 Easy backups!
  • Rebooting required.
• Seperate Windows box.
  • Syncthing.
  • External unencrypted NTFS drive.
  • Remote
    • Parsec: You'll need Syncthing or a drive anyway!
    • RDP: Awful on Windows.. Crazy but experience is better on Linux to Linux.
