[Transcription] A Word About EQ | iZotope Pro Audio Essentials

Welcome to the section on EQ.

If you want to get better at using equalizers, there are some things you need to understand about them, and that we were going to spend a few minutes getting down to basics.

The pros all know these basics so you should too. It will pay off for you later when we look at how to do things.

EQ you've probably used it all your life. There and many of the music players you use everyday. Your car stereo which has tone controls to boost or cut the lower high-end. Your phone or music player which has different presets for different types of music. You'll find them everywhere.

If you're watching this video, chances are you own some hardware or software EQs which allow you to be much more precise with your EQ adjustments. then just turning a knob on your dashboard to pump up the bass.

As you probably noticed in your music production, we apply EQ with both the micro and macro levels. That is, we apply EQ to individual instruments when we're recording and mixing, and we also make adjustments at the song level when we're mastering the whole song.

We use EQ to bring forward certain characteristics, like the brightness of a pick strumming a guitar for example, or to help an instruments character blend in better with other instruments, for instance, by reducing the boominess of the sound of an acoustic guitar.

This course will give you lots of chances to practice listening to and using EQ. Ultimately, you'll be able to connect the controls on your EQ with the sound you're listening to, and the sound you're going for, then, you'll be able to make adjustments, so you can get more of what you want and less of what you don't.

As you practice and improve you'll be able to get to the final result more quickly, and that's important. The person who is trained their ears to use an EQ can spend less time analyzing and more time being creative.
