Comprehension in the age of distraction. That’s what good news design is all about, isn’t it?
No matter your title or organization, if you help create story experiences you have a responsibility to help your audience understand content; or to at least read beyond the first scroll. Research shows more than a third of the people who land on a story page bounce right off before they even get started.
That raises the question, "How can we work across disciplines to keep audiences consuming our content?"
The Society For News Design recognizes you as an industry thought leader, and we'd love for you to join us for "SND Prototypes: The story," a hybrid un-conference and prototyping event to rethink the paradigms of our story experiences. We'll begin Friday morning, March 21, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana, and we'll part ways that Sunday.
Sure, you've heard of events like this before, but we think ours is a little bit different!
This event is about community, not competition. We'll ask each participant to spend 5-7 minutes sharing expertise or posing a question, and then we'll design and develop possibilities. Participants will have the chance to pitch specific problems they'd most like to solve around the story experience, teams will be formed across products or publications, and our prototypes will all be open source.
We're hosting our event concurrently with the Society For News Design's best of digital design competition. Throughout the weekend, judges from publications and products around the world will share insights with un-conference participants into trends they observe in pieces of the world's best visual journalism.
We're bringing together some of the brightest minds from agencies, news organizations, news products and the open-source community alike. We want a diversity of expertise from professionals who work inside and outside of newsroom walls.
We're starting an on-going conversation about the biggest issues in digital news design, and creating solutions that will inform an industry. We’ll leave Indianapolis with a clear set of next steps to build on the momentum created together.
Space is limited — only 35 spots are available — so we encourage you to RSVP as soon as possible by following this link. (Do not complete this form unless you plan to attend.)
For your convenience, we've reserved a small block of rooms at the Omni Severin hotel in downtown Indianapolis, just two blocks from the event site, the Ball State University Indianapolis Center. Just reference the Society For News Design room block.
This is a high-volume weekend for Indianapolis hotels, so we encourage you to make your arrangements sooner rather than later.
We hope you’ll take us up on our invitation and join us for SND Prototypes: The story.
