FreeBSD: preferring ee (avoiding vi) for csh/tcsh and sh

Final changes when exiting FreeBSD Installer

Install ee (easy editor) and nano

FreeBSD 14:

pkg install --yes nano

FreeBSD 15 or 16 with pkgbase:

pkg install -y base/FreeBSD-ee editors/nano
  • ee(1) is no longer a feature of the minimal system.

/etc/csh.cshrc

setenv EDITOR ee

/etc/profile

export EDITOR=ee

/root/.cshrc

Remove the EDITOR line.

/usr/share/skel/dot.cshrc

Remove the EDITOR line.

/usr/share/skel/dot.profile

Remove the EDITOR line.

For any user that was added before the two dot files were edited

~/.cshrc

Remove the EDITOR line.

~/.profile

Remove the EDITOR line.
