Cheapy off camera flash shopping list

1. A flash, the Yongnuo 565EX is a decent option - supports ETTL on camera so can be used for "normal" flash. Also supports wireless ETTL, but only with a camera that has a built in master (600d, 60d etc), or a camera with an ST-E2 on top.

Batteries - I'd recommend Eneloop for the AAs for the flash ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0096BBV0C/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) and the cheapy 7day shop AAAs for the trigers ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002XLJVYK/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) - flashes take 4 batteries, triggers take 2.

To keep things easy though, you can just place the flash and brolly pointing 45degress down and to the left (so it's high camera right), set it to 1/8th power, set your shutter to 1/250, then adjust the aperture to get a good exposure.. as per this amazing diagram:
