A two/three night hackathon on free and open source software[Ex. Gnome, KDE, Wikimedia].

  • Download the source – using version control
  • Intro to the programming language used
  • Communicating with the community – IRC, Mailing lists
  • Bugs -
    • Bug tracker
    • Find simple bugs
  • Fixing Bugs

Format -

Mentors – 3
Students – ~20/Mentor
Schedule – 2/3 Nights (8:00PM:whenever they wanna go)

Filtering Students -

  • A simple online questionnaire which any geek can answer.

Potential Bottlenecks -

  • Mentors may not be available(Since CEG is a regional college).
  • Students may not necessarily give a crap about FOSS.

Requisites -

  • The event should happen at night.
  • Open ports 22[ssh],443[https],6667[IRC]

Notes -

  • Do any of the computers on our lab run Linux? – We’ll need admin permissions for each computer, since we’d have to install software during the hackfest.
  • No certificates. Make it clear on the website. We don’t want people turning up only for certificates.
