Watch a 30 minute children's program that has advertising during the program. Take notes on each of the commercials by answering the following questions:
What product is being advertised?
Who is the targeted audience of the commercial? ( Be specific eg. boys age 8 -12 or parents etc. )
What technique(s) of persuasion is/are used? (Use handout)
On a scale of 1 to 10, evaluate each commercial as to how successful you think the persuasion was?
Write your opinion as to whether or not you think children today are negatively influenced by T.V. advertising. Give reasons to support your opinion. Hand this in to the Lesson 2 Part 1 Assignment Hand-In Box on the course home page.
Write a Forum Post in Lesson 2 Part 1 forum on the course home page sharing what you wrote in point #2 above.

1. Humour - use of funny images, sounds or humour devices such as satire, slapstick, puns, parody.
2. Macho - strong, tough powerful – usually males. May carry weapons or be pictured in dangerous situations.
3. Friends – groups of people enjoying each other and doing things together
4. Family – mother, father, children or intergenerational group
5. Fun – everyone is happy – smiling and laughing
6. Nature – Outdoor settings – mountains, oceans, desert, snow, flowers, animals – may or may not have people included.
7. Sexy – emphasis on physical attributes of models, usually female; may wear revealing clothing and be shown flirting through attitude or body language.
8. Cartoon – People or animals portrayed in animation or caricature.
9. Celebrity – Someone most people recognize – athlete, musician, politician or movie star
10. Wealth – expensive and elegant places and things
