**• Write 1-2 paragraphs about your StrengthsFinder themes: How have you seen yourself using these strengths at Turing? Has your understanding of these strengths changed since you first reflected on them? If so, how?**
My StrengthsFinder themes were not surprising to me at all. The five strengths I was given were empathy, futuristic, restorative, deliberative, and harmony. My first strength was empathy, and I’ve noticed myself using that strength to help others when I know they are struggling with a concept that I understand. Another strength I’ve seen come in to play is my tendency to be futuristic. When I’m struggling myself and want to give up, instead of using “in the moment rewards”, I imagine the life I want for myself and how completing Turing will help me reach my future goals. Harmony described my extreme dislike for conflict and that has continued into my work at Turing. I have trouble bringing up problems I may have with partners, and even trouble asking for help sometimes when it seems everyone else is ready to move on. It hasn’t affected my performance so far, but assertiveness it is something I am continuing to work on.
**• Write a story about your Turing experience so far: When have you struggled? How have you dealt with struggle? When have you succeeded at Turing? How did you accomplish those successes?**
There have been many things I have struggled with at Turing in many areas. Getting used to the schedule was a big adjustment for me. The daily commute is about an hour and a half each way, and the workload has been very challenging and required not just hours every night but also hours during weekends. After every project I have felt proud and accomplished. I could not have done a lot of the partner projects without help from my peers, upper mods, and instructors.
**• After you practice storytelling in the session, answer this question: What was particularly easy or difficult about telling your story? What are 1-2 steps that you can take to continue to improve your abilities to tell your story, talk about yourself with ease, and examine your strengths?**
Talking in front of people has always been difficult for me. It was easier in the session because the people I was with were there because they felt they belonged there as well. It was assumed we all had a few commonalities. Becoming more confident in my abilities will make it easier for me to talk about myself. Lightning talks and group work are both good ways to practice talking in front of others. Continuing those practice with Turing will be a good way to help my personal growth. |
