desktop-file-validate vscode.desktop
vscode.desktop: error: value "Programming;" for key "Categories" in group "Desktop Entry" contains an unregistered value "Programming"; values extending the format should start with "X-"
vscode.desktop: hint: value "Programming;" for key "Categories" in group "Desktop Entry" does not contain a registered main category; application might only show up in a "catch-all" section of the application menu
You can change it for "Development", see the specification
It will pass validation! :)

This assumes the application has been extracted to
/usr/local/src
Change the Exec and Icon values to point to the real install folder if this isn't the case
