Perl module authors are used to doing things with make:
perl Makefile.PL # Makes a makefile
make # Build the preinstall
make test # Run the tests
make install # Install everything
make dist # Make a CPAN distibution package
make upload # Send the dist to CPAN
make clean # Reset
and many others. Adding:
make debian
to that list would get people to try it!
Module::Install lets you easily add Makefile targets to modules. Even targets
that only get used by the module authors.
Debian::Perl (the thing I released to CPAN yesterday as a skeleton) does this.
The next thing to do is decide what `make debian` will do and code it.
Here's a strawman plan, from what little I know:
* Run dh-make-perl on the dist.
* Scan the output for common errors and print FAQ suggestions.
* Stop if there are errors.
* Run debuild or pbuilder.
* Scan, suggest and stop (as above)
* Run lintian.
* Scan, suggest and stop (as above)
* Give them a pat on the back, and tell them what to do next.
Of course there would be various ways to config things. `make build` would
offer hints on config for future runs as well.
