busted tablet #1

when testing the Schottky Diode with my meter i got 0.2V with the red probe on the left side of the diode and when the red probe was placed on the right side of the diode i got OL

i was able to remove the ITE chip this afternoon using hot air and board preheater. i had my hot air on the lowest setting with temp at 395 and the board preheater at 300

both surface tablets i have use the same logic board, ie. the X910540-007

the second tablet has an additional issue where the LED on the charger does not illuminate.

tablet that does light up charger LED needs trace level BGA repair 😭 near the ITE chip. also several smd components near the SMD chip require replacement as the hot air knocked or removed the componement from its place. one of the components being C3615 a 0.1u 6.3V capacitor

got high resistance on the outer edges of both mosfets q7005 and q7002. however did not get any resistance on the single inner pin inner side of the mosfets, labeled, pwr_sl1_ext_dc_d which i believe is the drain side of the mosfet

todos

  • post comment in below youtube video asking author if knows which battery contacts can short the ITE chip when repairing a ms surface 4 tablet.

    • this information would be useful in preventing the failure of the ITE chip for future and current repairs.

  • what is a good temperature for a soldering iron to remove excess solder from a circuit board with solder wick that uses a BGA chip?

  • need to find replacement caps for the board that does not show LED on charger

    • c6871 - 25V 0.22u
    • c6867 - 25V 0.22u

  • Q if i remove the ITE chip from the board, will the charger led still light up on the charger, with the ITE chip removed from the board?

    • yes the led on the charger will still light up / illuminate. 👍️ with the ITE chip removed and the charger plugged in to the logic board.

troubleshooting

troubleshooting / power on sequence aka no power

the power on sequence for the device is broken down into 14 steps

  1. j7101 is the power power connector (removable) attached to the logic board the voltage signal travels across pwr_sl1 to pwr_slf
  2. u7008 -> sl1_pwr_good
