brew is a bad neighbor

This isn't a guide about locking down homebrew so that it can't touch the rest of your system security-wise.

This guide doesn't fix the inherent security issues of a package management system that will literally yell at you if you try to do something about "huh, maybe it's not great my executables are writeable by my account without requiring authorization first".

But it absolutely is a guide about shoving it into its own little corner so that you can take it or leave it as you see fit, instead of just letting the project do what it likes like completely taking over permissions and ownership of a directory that might be in use by other software on your Mac and stomping all over their contents.

By following this guide you will:

Never have to run sudo to forcefully change permissions of some directory to be owned by your account

Enable honeybadger for javascript using rails-webpacker and cloudfront

Source maps is enabled by default when using rails-webpacker. The rask tasks open the manifest file, post the source map to honeybadger and remove the source map file and remove it from the manifest.

GPG and git on macOS

Setup

No need for homebrew or anything like that. Works with https://www.git-tower.com and the command line.

Install https://gpgtools.org -- I'd suggest to do a customized install and deselect GPGMail.
Create or import a key -- see below for https://keybase.io
Run gpg --list-secret-keys and look for sec, use the key ID for the next step
Configure git to use GPG -- replace the key with the one from gpg --list-secret-keys

application components should use third-party software, e.g. HDFS, Spark's cluster, deployed separately
configuration templating
environment requires/asserts, i.e. we need a JVM in a given version before doing deployment

How to seed a Rails database with a CSV file

1. Setup

First, Create a folder inside of lib called seeds

Put your CSV file example.csv into the lib/seeds folder. In the example below, the file is called real_estate_transactions.csv

Make sure you've created a resource with the appropriate columns to match your seed data. The names don't have to match up.
