Getting my Valve Index to run flawlessly on ArchLinux with i3wm

Note: this guide was written in 2020 and will probably be outdated for modern systems. You probably want to look at a different guide like https://lvra.gitlab.io/ instead - it also includes guides specific to games and other hardware. I haven't tried out their guide yet, but it looks of good quality to me and there is also a Matrix community available.

Getting my Valve Index to run flawlessly on ArchLinux with i3wm

I've bought the Valve Index VR headset and wanted to play on Linux. I had done a lot of tinkering with my Linux Machine up to this point so quite a few things on the headset initially had issues working alright.

I have listed all of the problems I encountered on ArchLinux with Valve Index and Steam VR in this post and how I managed to solve nearly all of them.

Hide tab bar on firefox 89 when there is only one tab
/*
How To:
1. Find your firefox profile folder : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data
2. create a "chrome" folder if it doesn't exist
3. Paste content of this gist in a "userChrome.css" file
4. Go to about:config and set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to true
5. set browser.tabs.tabmanager.enabled to false (to hide the "tab search" button)
5. Restart Firefox
Don't hesitate to say if there are bugs, I only tested this for my workflow : I don't use tabs

Bitcoin: Migrate away from Armory Wallet

Bitcoin: Migrate away from Armory Wallet

Previously I setup an Armory online/offline/cold/paper bitcoin storage system. Recently I decided to migrate my bitcoin from Armory wallet cold storage to the BIP39 and related standards. I hadn't switched on the offline PC in a long time, and neither had I updated the blockchain on the online PC. Thus, I started considering my recovery options should something have broken or gone missing. Below are some of the ways I found to recover and move bitcoin in such failure scenarios.

Armory Paper Backup -> Root Key

Version 1.35c

The single-sheet Armory paper backup directly displays the Root Key, e.g.:

Root Key: nidh jtfj ejue whkj dngt dftt hsss idgh ssss
wwad dojw aeja idfg went ukkk sajj uuwj kwjt

Rsync over SSH - (40MB/s over 1GB NICs)

The fastest remote directory rsync over ssh archival I can muster (40MB/s over 1gb NICs)

This creates an archive that does the following:

rsync (Everyone seems to like -z, but it is much slower for me)

  • a: archive mode - rescursive, preserves owner, preserves permissions, preserves modification times, preserves group, copies symlinks as symlinks, preserves device files.
  • H: preserves hard-links
  • A: preserves ACLs

Building the Armory Bitcoin client for the Raspberry Pi

Armory on the RPi

Building the Armory Bitcoin client for the Raspberry Pi

This is how I got Armory (etotheipi/BitcoinArmory; http://bitcoinarmory.com/) cross-compiled for the Raspberry Pi.

This is a great way to keep an air-gapped offline wallet for only $30 dollars for the RPi (that you can also use for other things; experiment, it's awesome) and $7 for a Class 10 4GB SD card, really easy to keep in a safe and secret place.
