Title:
Clever ideas from 2 years ago
Abstract:
In Late September, 2010, I left my job in Boston at 3M and moved across the country to work at Engine Yard in San Francisco.
I brought with me a collection of 40 open source repositories I had extracted from my work. I thought they would be invaluable, but I didn’t use a single one.
Did my skill in working with ruby on rails improve? Not substantially. What changed almost immediately, was my mindset. Though I didn’t realize it at the time, I was infected the moment I pair programmed.
So let me take you on a little tour of the archives, and reflect on them now with my shifted mindset. I'll explain an overly complex permissions system, a method of doing view inheritance, and SOA using AMQP with shared memcached.
Who knew that building web services for dental imaging devices would share so little in common with maintaining a platform for running rails apps?
