i've tried encode.('utf-8).strip() from this so answer: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/22216076/unicodedecodeerror-utf8-codec-cant-decode-byte-0xa5-in-position-0-invalid-s but it didn't work. maybe i did it wrong. i also swapped out the & for & but that didn't work either.
