Noting down the basics for file encryption for future reference. Particularly helpful for the next time I need to pass SSL certs around.

Basic encrypting of files to send between people who understand public/private keys.

Encrypting

Generate a random password file. The longer the better (245 characters seems to be the limit for RSA encryption though).

openssl rand 245 > key.file

How to securely set rails secret key when you deploy to Heroku.

Stop Versioning Rails Secret Tokens

After reading Code Climate's Rails' Insecure Defaults I realized I was guilty of breaking rule 3. Versioned Secret Tokens. Here's how I fixed it.

Use dotenv in development and test environments:

# Gemfile
gem 'dotenv-rails', groups: [:development, :test]

Place this in ~/.git_template/hooks/pre-commit and chmod to 755. Now, ensure you have git >= 1.7.1 and run: git config --global init.templatedir '~/.git_template' Back in your repository, run git init again and the hook will appear.

git pr - Global .gitconfig aliases for Pull Request Managment

Install

Either copy the aliases from the .gitconfig or run the commands in add-pr-alias.sh

Usage

Easily checkout local copies of pull requests from remotes:

  • git pr 4 - creates local branch pr/4 from the github upstream(if it exists) or origin remote and checks it out
  • git pr 4 someremote - creates local branch pr/4 from someremote remote and checks it out
