In Syria, there are vast humanitarian needs -- look at the cities of ash and the utterly bereft left behind by continuing war in Syria. But I can't wipe from mind the fully-documented reports out of Afghanistan about the corruption, waste and misspending of seeming unlimited American dollars to allegedly win hearts and minds. Just how much of it will remain by the time the Taliban stop fighting? In Syria, the forces at work are even more tangled and the damage seems to me more vast. Keeping 2000 U.S. troops there doesn't seem like much, but when you look at all the winds still buffeting the nation -- from the Syrian government, anti-government groups, ISIS remnants, Russia, Iran and our allied group -- you must ask and answer key questions. Like, what should we rebuild and who help in an ocean of needs and needy; what is our end goal there; what can we afford for humanitarian aid; and what role should the U.S. play in the continuing Assad v. anti-government war?<br\/><br\/>Is anyone even asking the questions? If we don't look full in the face at all of it, we don't belong there.","createDate":"1522861346","updateDate":"1522861352","approveDate":"1522861352","recommendations":1,"replyCount":0,"replies":[],"editorsSelection":false,"parentID":null,"parentUserDisplayName":null,"depth":1,"commentType":"comment","trusted":0,"recommendedFlag":null,"reportAbuseFlag":null,"permID":"26598468","picURL":"https:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/apps\/timespeople\/none.png","timespeople":1,"sharing":0},{"commentID":26598118,"status":"approved","commentSequence":26598118,"userID":22795289,"userDisplayName":"Terri","userLocation":"NYC","userTitle":"NULL","userURL":"NULL","commentTitle":"<br\/>","commentBody":"Is it possible the talk of pulling out of Syria is a give to Putin to soften the \"expelling\" of their diplomats (even though Trump is also already allowing all 60 to be immediately replaced)?","createDate":"1522860009","updateDate":"1522861339","approveDate":"1522861339","recommendations":2,"replyCount":0,"replies":[],"editorsSelection":false,"parentID":null,"parentUserDisplayName":null,"depth":1,"commentType":"comment","trusted":0,"recommendedFlag":null,"reportAbuseFlag":null,"permID":"26598118","picURL":"https:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/apps\/timespeople\/none.png","timespeople":1,"sharing":0}],"page":76,"totalCommentsReturned":25,"totalCommentsFound":337,"totalParentCommentsFound":238,"totalParentCommentsReturned":25,"totalReplyCommentsFound":99,"totalReplyCommentsReturned":2,"totalReporterReplyCommentsFound":0,"totalReporterReplyCommentsReturned":0,"totalEditorsSelectionFound":14,"totalEditorsSelectionReturned":1,"totalRecommendationsFound":192,"totalRecommendationsReturned":19,"replyLimit":3,"depthLimit":2,"sort":"newest","filter":"newest","callerID":null,"api_timestamp":"1522874697","userData":{"userID":0,"login":null,"email":"","displayName":"","url":"","title":"","location":"","times_people":0,"sharing":0,"labels":[]}}} |
