The Wikipedia article for Pixel Art mentions the December 1982 volume of Communications of the ACM's "ACM President's Letter: Pixel Art", which was the first time the term "pixel art" was apparently published.

The December '82 letter talks about how they created the pixel art transition of the former to latter president's image in the July 1982 volume of Communications of the ACM's "ACM President's letter: metamorphosis".
