NPR Softball 2014

Welcome to NPR softball 2014! We're a recreational group looking to have a great time playing in the Metropolitan Media Softball League.

Map

Equipment

NPR will provide wooden bats and softballs for the league. Each player is minimally responsible for the following:

Glove: You don't need a special softball glove, but you do need one that's comfortable. It might be better to buy a used (read: already broken-in) glove from Play-It-Again sports or the like if you're not feeling like dealing with a new glove.

Cleats: Seriously, buy cleats. Plastic ones, not metal. The fields are quite wet and muddy early in the year, and the most common injury comes from falls when players lose their footing in the field or on the basepaths.

Hat: Get a nice, comfortable cap. The MMSL umpires may require that players wear one. This is at their discretion. You should have one handy if we get an umpire who is feeling particular about this.

Sunglasses: Squinting into the sun is terrible.

Water: You'll drink a lot of it because we play doubleheaders. You can't go wrong with a gallon.

Wooden softball bats

In the MMSL, men hit with wooden bats. Not all wooden softball bats are acceptable. These must be approved for slow-pitch softball and have a narrow barrel. If your bat looks like a baseball bat, it will probably be banned.

Brett Brothers bats are inexpensive (comparatively) and have a composite handle which means they'll last longer than other kinds of wood softball bats.

Metal softball bats

In the MMSL, women may hit with metal or wooden bats. There are a great many approved metal softball bats. Here is the definitive list of approved bats. If your bat is not on this list, it may be acceptable, but probably not worth the risk.
