Holo cheat sheet

My Routine

Heres my general daily routine so you know what she's used to.

  • Wake up around 7:30
  • Potty break (wait till poop)
  • Give food and water
  • Take shower
  • Potty break
  • Play/train for ~15-30 minutes
  • Start work day
  • Holo entertains herself and naps for a couple hours
  • Potty break immediately after waking up
  • Feed around lunch time
  • Potty break 15-30min after eating
  • Holo naps on and off with potty breaks in between.
  • ~15-30min play/train sessions if she is acting out.
  • Feed again sometime between 3pm and 5pm
  • At 5pm she is wired, lots of play/training
  • If she is still hungry she can have snack
  • She tires out around 7:30-8:30
  • Let her get into a good nap and then put in crate and dim the lights
    • You can still watch tv or whatever, sound doesn't really bother her.
  • She will probably wake up sometime between 3am-5am to potty

Feeding

  • 1.5 to 2 cups a day spread out over 3-4 feeding sessions
    • I usually feed her half a cup at a time and play it by ear throughout the day
  • You can give her as much kibble as you want for training or rewards
  • Save the real treats for big rewards and use sparingly. Usually I break these up into halves/quarters.
  • She can have as much water as she wants throughout the day obviously but cut her off by 7:30-8:00pm so she wakes up less in the middle of the night.

Potty

  • It's easiest to get her to go when she's on a leash and taken to a consistent place where she knows it is the place to potty.
    • Don't let her explore much, sit, lay down, or play with sticks etc.. Keep her focused on pottying.
  • She will poop 2-3 times a day. Big poop in the morning (usually two).
  • If she is sniffing around or acting out there is a good chance she has to pee.
  • Reward potty with affirmation and/or treats. Make sure to say 'potty'

Crate/pin

  • Take off her harness before leaving her in the crate
  • Putting her in the crate is much easier when she is already sleepy or napping
  • She can be left in the crate for up to an hour
  • She can be left in the pin for 15-20min but make sure to tie off the doors and construct the pin so she can't sneak out
  • Let her have the fox in the crate.
  • Let her have lots of toys and water in the pin.

Tricks/Training

Tricks she knows:

  • "Sit" (point at her)
  • "Stay" (show the palm of your hand)
  • "Come Here" or "OK" to break the stay
  • "Shake" (present your right hand)
  • "Lay down" (show back of hand and gesture to floor)

Tricks you might want to start training her if you get bored with the tricks she knows

  • "Up"/"Down" (point to where she should go)
    • Get a small platform she can step up/down from
    • Lead her on to it with a treat while pointing and saying 'up'
    • Do a "sit"
    • Lead her off of it with a treat while pointing and saying 'down'
    • She should be able to step on and off the platform with out jumping.
    • Slowly increase the height of the platform but not to a hight that requires a jump (she is not allowed to jump until her growth plate has finished growing or else she will have back problems)
  • "Rollover"/"Play dead"
  • Any thing else you want to try

Bad behavior

  • Wired, rough play, zoomies
    • She acts out when she is hungry, bored, or has to potty
    • Try taking her to potty or if it is near feeding time give her food
    • If it is because she is bored, start a play/training session
      • Avoid getting on her level or playing with your hands. It just wires her even more. Use the toys
      • Shake her treat bag and start drilling tricks. This is usually the best way to get her to calm down.
    • If she bites too hard let out a yelp so she know it hurts.
      • Yell 'no' but don't keep saying it over and over again because that just trains her to ignore you
      • Sometimes you just have to pick her up or put her in a pin for a minute to cool down.
  • Chewing on things
    • Give a firm, loud 'no'
    • Take a toy and wedge it in her mouth so she learns to chew on toy instead of thing
    • While pulling her away from the thing she's chewing on is sometimes a necessity to prevent that thing from being ruined, but it doesn't teach her to not chew on the thing so prefer other methods.
  • Jumping on people/other dogs
    • Keep her on leash and make her sit before playing.

Brushing

  • I try to brush her 2-4 times a week with both brushes
    • Grey undercoat brush
    • Orange topcoat brush
