Beer cheese bread

(from: Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book, 1996)

  1. Set oven to 375°F. Grease the bottom and sides of an 8×4×2-inch or 9×5×3-inch loaf pan; set aside.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, stir together:

    • 2½ cups flour
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • 2½ tsp baking powder
    • ½ tsp baking soda
    • ½ tsp salt
    • 1 tsp dried oregano, crushed
    • ½ tsp dried basil or marjoram, crushed
  3. Then add:

    • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
    • a bottle of beer (around 12 oz.)
    • (optional) 1 tbsp chopped, seeded fresh jalapeño pepper

Stir just till combined. The batter should be lumpy.

  4. Bake in prepared pan at 375°F for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then remove. Serve warm with lots of butter.
