Differences Between Diablo II and Diablo II: Resurrected

This markdown outlines the key differences between Diablo II (LOD) and Diablo II: Resurrected (D2R), categorized as presented in the original audio from MrLlamaSC's videos here:

Game

  1. Graphics Update: Resolution increased to 1920x1080, resulting in increased teleport range and wider field of vision. While some item art is subjectively less appealing, the overall visual improvement is significant.

  2. Duriel Quest Bug Fix: The exploit allowing players to repeatedly trigger bonus drops from Duriel has been removed. Duriel now consistently drops items according to the quest reward parameters.

  3. Controller Support: Controller support has been added, though menu navigation remains less intuitive compared to PC controls. The functionality is generally considered viable and well-received by controller players.

  4. Cow King Lockout Removal: The lockout preventing repeated Cow King kills has been removed.

  5. Hit Recovery Nerf (PvP): Hit recovery in player-versus-player combat now has diminishing returns, preventing extended chain-locking. A short period of immunity is applied after a hit. Hit recovery remains functional in PvE.

  6. Bug Fixes: Numerous bugs have been fixed, including weapon swap glitches, "E" bugging, strength glitches, and a mercenary targeting bug. The removal of some exploits like E bugging is considered a loss by some players due to the previous fun factor.

Items

  1. New Rune Words: Five new helm Rune words have been introduced (Temper, Ground, Hearth, Cure, and Bulwark), each offering similar elemental resistances, and additional unique properties. Hearth grants Cannot Be Frozen, Cure has a Level 1 Cleansing aura, and Bulwark provides life steal, replenish life and physical damage reduction.

  2. Mosaic Rune Word: The Mosaic Rune word has been added, creating an overpowered character build with excessively high damage output, particularly for assassins. The speaker indicates this Rune word is problematic.

  3. Hustle Rune Word: A new Rune word, offering increased attack speed, faster run/walk, and potentially bonus IAS or fanaticism, depending on the location (weapon or armor). This Rune word is generally well-received.

  4. Metamorphosis Rune Word: While intended to enhance shapeshifting skills, this Rune word's impact is considered underwhelming and ultimately does not have a significant effect.

  5. Pattern Rune Word: A Rune word primarily useful for early-game characters or those using martial arts, providing modest damage increases. Considered a relatively minor addition.

  6. Unbending Will Rune Word: This Rune word offers powerful stats but requires a rare Fal Rune and a six-socket weapon, limiting its practical use due to rarity.

  7. Plague Rune Word: Previously unused files for this Rune word were implemented. It provides a chance for lowered enemy resistances and offers a cleansing aura. Considered decent overall.

  8. Wisdom Rune Word: This Rune word, though requiring a Pul Rune, provides cannot be frozen and bonus attributes, making it useful for specific builds.

  9. Mist Rune Word: A five-socket Rune word offering a concentration aura, piercing, and enhanced damage. While potentially strong in certain builds, it has not seen extensive personal use by the speaker.

  10. Increased Item Quantity: Arrow, bolt, and throwing item quantities have received significant increases. This change is noted as being especially impactful for bowazons, javalons, and throw barbs.

Online

  1. Dclone Spawning: Diablo Clone (Dclone) now spawns globally on all servers simultaneously across regions (North America, Europe, Asia), eliminating the previous reliance on finding specific servers/IPs.

  2. Cross-Region Character Play: Players can now access characters from one region's servers on those of other regions.

  3. 22 Nights of Terror: A seasonal event running for 22 nights in December, introducing daily modifiers that impact the gameplay experience (both beneficial and detrimental). These daily effects are displayed in the bottom left of the online screen.

  4. Game Creation and Character Expiration: Limits on game creation frequency and character expiration have been removed.

  5. Name Uniqueness: Character name restrictions have been removed; multiple characters can now share the same name.

  6. Lobby Improvements: The game lobby has been slightly improved to allow for filtering games by difficulty and includes a refresh button, though further changes are desired by the speaker.

Mercenary Changes from D2 LOD to D2R

General Changes

  • Hiring a Mercenary in Expansion mode will now always match your character's level
  • Updated stat/skill gains across all difficulties to eliminate disadvantages of leveling mercs from different difficulties

Act 1 - Rogue Archer

  • Can now use Amazon Bows
  • Can now gain + Amazon skill bonuses from gear
  • Skills updated:
    • Added Freezing Arrow (upgrade to Cold Arrow)
    • Added Explosion Arrow (upgrade to Fire Arrow)

Act 2 - Desert Mercenary

  • Nightmare and Hell difficulty now have all 6 aura types available (previously split 3/3 between difficulties)
  • Thorns (Combat - Nightmare):
    • Thorns aura level scaling increased
    • Will now continue scaling beyond highest-level threshold

Act 3 - Iron Wolf

  • Life baseline and scaling increased by ~25% (similar to Rogue Archer)
  • Defense baseline and scaling increased by ~40% (closer to Rogue Archer)
  • Resistances baseline and scaling increased by ~20% (highest base resistances of all mercs)

Iron Wolf Skill Changes:

  • Cold:
    • Increased Glacial Spike casting frequency
    • Increased Glacial Spike level scaling
    • Replaced Frozen Armor with Chilling Armor
  • Fire:
    • Removed Inferno
    • Added Fire Bolt
    • Increased Fire Ball casting frequency
    • Added Enchant (casts on self, player, and nearby allies)
  • Lightning:
    • Added Static Field
    • Increased Charged Bolt level scaling
    • Increased Lightning casting frequency

Act 5 - Barbarian Warrior

  • Can now gain + Barbarian skill bonuses from gear
  • Life baseline scaling increased (highest life of all mercs)
  • Defense baseline increased but scaling reduced at higher levels (highest base defense)

Two Types Now Available:

  1. Two-handed Barbarian:

    • Bash level scaling increased (no longer capped at 80)
    • Stun level scaling increased (no longer capped at 80)
    • Added Battle Cry skill
  2. New Dual-Wielding Barbarian:

    • Cannot use two-handed swords
    • Uses Frenzy, Taunt, and Iron Skin abilities

End Game

  1. Terror Zones: Terror Zones appear hourly once a difficulty is completed, increasing monster levels (character level +2 or area level, whichever is higher) and improving drop rates of higher-tier items. The speaker notes this is particularly beneficial for players working towards level 99. A variety of area levels are increased to area level 85.

  2. Thunder Charms: Thunder Charms add the ability to negate enemy immunities to cold, lightning, or fire, by introducing a substantial resistance reduction (95%). However, using these charms imposes a reduced resistance penalty to the player.

Assassin Changes from D2 LOD to D2R

Martial Arts

  • Attack Rating bonus increased for all charge-up skills (Fist of Fire, Claws of Thunder, Blades of Ice, Tiger Strike, Cobra Strike, Phoenix Strike)
    • Base bonus increased from 15% to 25%
    • Per level bonus increased from 7% to 10%
  • Finishing moves (Dragon Talon, Dragon Claw, Dragon Tail, Dragon Flight) now only consume 1 charge instead of all 3
  • All finishing moves now always hit if the Assassin has any Martial Arts charges
  • Dragon Claw damage bonus per level increased from 5% to 15%
  • Dragon Tail damage bonus per level increased from 10% to 20%
  • Dragon Flight changes:
    • Casting Delay removed
    • Damage bonus per level increased from 25% to 35%

Shadow Disciplines

  • Fade tooltip updated to show physical damage resist reduction
  • Venom buff duration scaling changed from 4 seconds to 12 seconds per level
  • Shadow Warrior Casting Delay reduced from 6 seconds to 0.6 seconds
  • Shadow Master Casting Delay reduced from 6 seconds to 0.6 seconds
  • Casting Delays will no longer share cooldowns with other skills

Traps

  • Death Sentry synergy removed from Shock Web, Charged Bolt Sentry, Lightning Sentry, and Fire Blast
  • Synergy increases to compensate:
    • Shock Web synergies increased from 11% to 17%
    • Fire Blast synergies increased from 9% to 11%
    • Charged Bolt Sentry synergies increased from 6% to 9%
    • Lightning Sentry synergies increased from 12% to 18%
    • Wake of Fire synergies increased from 8% to 10%
    • Wake of Inferno synergies increased from 10% to 18%

Blade Skills

  • Blade Sentinel:
    • Casting Delay reduced from 2 seconds to 1 second
    • Missile speed increased by 20%
    • Weapon Damage increased from 37% to 75%
    • Added synergies with Blade Fury and Blade Shield (10% damage per level)
  • Blade Fury:
    • Added synergies with Blade Sentinel and Blade Shield (10% damage per level)
    • Attack rating increased by 10% per level
  • Blade Shield:
    • Duration baseline increased from 20 seconds to 120 seconds
    • Duration scaling per level increased from 5 seconds to 12 seconds

Additional Changes

  • Lightning trap damage now affected by +% Lightning Damage and -Enemy Lightning Resistance items
  • Trap bug fixed (traps no longer count towards unique monster counts in areas)

Elemental Skills

Fire Skills

  • Casting Delays no longer share cooldowns between skills
  • Firestorm cooldown display added to tooltip
  • Molten Boulder:
    • Missile speed increased by 100% (range decreased by 50% to keep same travel length)
    • Casting Delay reduced from 2 seconds to 1 second
    • Volcano synergy increased from 10% to 12%
  • Fissure cooldown display added to tooltip
  • Volcano:
    • Molten Boulder synergy increased from 12% to 16%
    • Duration now shown in tooltip
  • Armageddon:
    • Casting Delay removed
    • Physical Damage significantly increased
    • Physical Damage now shown in tooltip
    • Volcano synergy changed to increase Physical Damage (instead of Fire) and increased from 14% to 18%
    • Hurricane requirement removed

  • Arctic Blast:

Combat Masteries

  • Sword Mastery renamed to Blade Mastery and now affects daggers
  • All Masteries received Attack Rating bonus increases:
    • Blade/Axe/Mace/Polearm/Spear: Base bonus increased from 28% to 40%
    • Throwing: Base bonus increased from 30% to 44%
  • Throwing Mastery additions:
    • Added chance to not consume quantity (up to 55% at level 20)
    • Critical strikes now replenish quantity
    • Added chance to pierce

Warcries

  • All Warcries now display radius in tooltip
  • War Cry:
    • Damage increased by ~30%
    • Mana cost increase per level reduced from 1 to 0.75
  • Shout duration baseline increased from 20 seconds to 30 seconds
  • Battle Command duration baseline increased from 5 seconds to 30 seconds
  • Grim Ward:
    • Radius baseline value increased
    • Now adds Slow and increases Damage Taken for nearby enemies

    • Now scales with distance (double damage at melee range, scaling to normal at max range)

    • Damage level scaling increased to 70%
    • Salvation synergy increased from 6% to 10%
  • Holy Freeze:
    • Now scales with distance (double damage at melee range, scaling to normal at max range)
  • Holy Shock:

  • Sanctuary:
    • Now scales with distance (double damage at melee range, scaling to normal at max range)
  • Thorns:

    • Self damage now reduces per level (from flat 8% to 8% minus 1% per level)
  • Conversion:
    • Maximum conversion chance increased from 50% to 90%
  • Smite:
    • Tooltip now shows that skill always hits
  • Holy Bolt:
    • Now damages Demons in addition to Undead
    • Blessed Hammer synergy removed
    • Damage increased by 50%
    • Now pierces targets (Friendly and Hostile)
    • Prayer synergy increased from 15% to 20%
  • Fist of the Heavens:
    • Now damages Demons in addition to Undead
    • Casting Delay reduced from 1 second to 0.4 seconds
