Management @ PlanetScale

We want PlanetScale to be the best place to work. But every company says that, and very few deliver. Managers have a role in creating an amazing work experience, but things go awry when the wrong dynamic creeps in.

We have all seen those managers who collect people as “resources” or who control information as a way to gain “power.” In these cultures, people who “can’t” end up leading the charge. This is management mediocrity.

What will make us different? At PlanetScale, we won’t tolerate management mediocrity. We are building a culture where politics get you nowhere and impact gets you far. Managers are here to support people who get things done. They are as accountable to their team as their team is accountable to them.

We evaluate managers on the wellbeing and output of their team, how skillfully they collaborate with and influence others, and how inclusively and transparently they work.

You can expect your manager to:

  • Perceive a better version of you and support you in getting there

After many years of writing and thinking about developer documentation, I'm convinced that the discipline is still in its infancy. The goal of this document is to summarize my current opinions on the topic of documenting software.

When you ask a software developer what their favorite documentation is, you'll get a wide range of opinions with consensus centering roughly around the Stripe and Twilio documentation, as well as the documentation for open source software like Django, Perl, Flask, etc.

In academia, the uncontested master craftsman of developer documentation is Donald Knuth, who pioneered "Literate Programming"

At the frontier of developer documentation, we find projects like Eve and other projects inspired by Bret Victor's seminal "Inventing on Principle" video.

However, as folks at Dynamicland will often point out, the medium (in the McLuhan sense of the word) of software hasn't changed much since the days when code was written on teletypes: We still write software on fancy typewriters. The

A Review of Paul Graham's Bel, Chris Granger's Eve, and a Silly VR Rant

Hello Friends,

This elf begging to climb onto the web for Christmas began as a personal email, a review of Paul Graham's little Lisp Bel. He sprouted arms, legs, and in gingerstyle ran away. Arms for symbols, legs for conses: these primitives are the mark a Lisp — even more so than the parenthesis. What do we get when we remove these foundation stones: naming and pairing?

No pairs. No cons. No structure. Unordered. Chaos. Eve, a beautifully incomplete aspect oriented triple store. No need for legs when you can effortlessly transport to your destination. Lazy. Pure. Here and now, a retrospective.

No symbols. No names. No variables. Combinators. Forth. No need for arms when you can effortlessly push and pop your stack. No words. A world without words. Virtual worlds. Virtual reality. Space. Time. Motion. Action. Kinetic Programming, a proposal.

I apologize in advance. Checking my pocketwatch, I see I haven't t

Using Git Commit Message Templates to Write Better Commit Messages

The always enthusiastic and knowledgeable mr. @jasaltvik shared with our team an article on writing (good) Git commit messages: How to Write a Git Commit Message. This excellent article explains why good Git commit messages are important, and explains what constitutes a good commit message. I wholeheartedly agree with what @cbeams writes in his article. (Have you read it yet? If not, go read it now. I'll wait.) It's sensible stuff. So I decided to start following the

Amazon's Build System

Prologue

I wrote this answer on stackexchange, here: https://stackoverflow.com/posts/12597919/

It was wrongly deleted for containing "proprietary information" years later. I think that's bullshit so I am posting it here. Come at me.

The Question

Amazon is a SOA system with 100s of services (or so says Amazon Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels). How do they handle build and release?

Acronyms Seriously Suck - Elon Musk

From time to time, Musk will send out an e-mail to the entire company to enforce a new policy or let them know about something that's bothering him. One of the more famous e-mails arrived in May 2010 with the subject line: Acronyms Seriously Suck:

There is a creeping tendency to use made up acronyms at SpaceX. Excessive use of made up acronyms is a significant impediment to communication and keeping communication good as we grow is incredibly important. Individually, a few acronyms here and there may not seem so bad, but if a thousand people are making these up, over time the result will be a huge glossary that we have to issue to new employees. No one can actually remember all these acronyms and people don't want to seem dumb in a meeting, so they just sit there in ignorance. This is particularly tough on new employees.

That needs to stop immediately or I will take drastic action - I have given enough warning over the years. Unless an acronym is approved by me, it should not enter the SpaceX glossary.
