Today was my last day at Basho, just 3 weeks shy of 4 years.

Looking back, I'm thrilled how much we've accomplished, both with Riak itself but also the impact Basho has had on the greater distributed systems community.

I'm proud that my work on improving Riak's clustering system in Riak 1.0 ended up inspiring how Akka Clustering was built.

I'm forever grateful for being given the opportunity to build riak_ensemble and bring strong consistency to Riak.

I'm thrilled to see the various non-Basho projects that have built on riak_core, riak_ensemble, and other Basho-built components over the years.

I'm happy that many of today's well-known voices of distributed systems got their start as users of Riak back in the early NoSQL days -- where exposure to Riak opened their mind to distributed systems, CAP, causality, consensus, and other topics.

I'm amazed that RICON became a thing. It's a fantastic conference that brings together an entire community of different voices and perspectives that all share a common obsession -- distributed systems.

There is no place where I think I could have made as much of an impact, and has as much fun doing it, as Basho. These have been 4 years well-spent, and 2011-2013 in particular were the best years of my adult life so far.

But, 4 years is a long time to stay at a company. People change. Companies change.

And now, it's time for my next adventure.

So, what's next?

I'm taking the next 3 weeks off to relax, visit family, go on vacation, etc. On May 18, I hang my hat as a remote worker and return to the great majority that commutes to work. Happily, I'm staying here in Seattle

I'm not a fan of "I'm leaving X to go work for Y" style posts. This post is about remembering accomplishments at Basho. There's plenty of time to talk about the new gig once my first day starts.

Farewell Basho, it was great!
