Advantage Goal

The Problem

In high-profile knock-out tournament matches, teams tend to play defensively if the game remains drawn towards the end. As extra time and penalties loom, teams sometimes play /for/ penalties, knowing that whilst they may not be able to score from free play, they /might/ win the penalty shoot-out. This tends to make the game less entertaining for spectators, and can result in a result which some may deem didn't fairly reflect the balance of play. FIFA have stated they would like to see penalty shoot-outs ended, but previous solutions (the ‘golden’ and ‘silver’ goals) have proven unpopular, and have since been largely dropped.

Proposal

At the end of normal play (two halves of 45 minutes, plus stoppage time), the game enters a new format consisting of an arbitrary number of periods of extra time, each consisting of 10 minutes. At the start of each of these periods, each team must nominate one of their own players to remove from play. During this stage, the game can be won by either side scoring two clear goals more than their opponents. At this point the game ends, regardless of how much time remains in the current period.

Example A

The game ends 0-0 (11 vs 11). During the first period of extra time, neither side scores. (10 vs 10) During the second period of extra time, the home team scores twice. The game is won by the home side. (9 vs 9)

Example B

The game ends 1-1. (11 vs 11) During the first period of extra time, the away side scores, making it 1-2. (10 vs 10) During the second period of extra time, the home side equalises, making it 2-2, (9 vs 9) During the third period of extra time, the away side scores again, making it 2-3, then scores again, winning the game 4-2 (8 vs 8)
