Black and Blue
Black vs Blue
## The Jones'
Every so often, my wife will complain about how so-and-so has a bigger basement than ours or such-and-such just bought a new car or whatever. I have to remind her that it's all perception. The reality is that they share the same reality that we do. Mortgage payments, late bills, screaming kids, medical issues, etc.

## Anti- and social
I've been thinking a lot about depression lately, largely because I'm working my way through it. And, I suppose I've been working through it for a long time. Longer than I'd like to admit. And that's part of the problem. I've hidden it, and, to an extent, continue to hide it and deny it. But, a few months ago, I decided to essentially say "fuck it."
For a long time, I thought that social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc) was my "personal brand" so I needed to hide who I really was. I mean, this happened before social media even existed, but I'm just now figuring this out.
So, now, as I said, "fuck it." If I'm depressed, I'm going to tweet about it. Free therapy. If I'm diabetic, I'm going to share it. If there's someone out there that feels the same way, maybe I can help. Or maybe my tweet may let them know that they're not alone.
Yeah, I joke around a lot. I can chum it up at work, but after I deliver a one-liner in a meeting, I spend 20 minutes afterwards thinking: "could I have worded that better?" "was my delivery off?"

## The scorpions
As I was thinking about this, and thinking about the masks and illusions that we wear, I thought about the time we went to the Academy of Natural Sciences. There was a tarantula exhibit, but there were also scorpions there. To the human eye, they were black. Then, one of the instructors asked my daughter: "Do you want to see them glow in the dark?"
Of course!
So, she shined a blacklight on them and, what do you know, they glow blue.
And then she explained that that's the way that they see each other in nature.
So, are they black or blue?
Is our perception their reality?
Or vice versa?
