Some initial ideas from me and Clark:
These are just ideas and not requirements. Definitely open to hear feedback!

  • Ability to embed submissions via Codepen (or another comparable service).
  • A way to tweak voting so early submissions aren’t weighted unfairly.
    • Maybe a window for submissions, then a window for voting.
    • Or maybe hide the current numbers until voting is closed.
  • A way to ensure later submissions aren’t just minor tweaks to existing submissions.
    • Hide submissions until voting begins.
    • Or disable voting until entry deadline is reached.
  • Should the host/challenger select the final winner, or should it be determined solely by votes?
  • A place to share a collection of these challenges and their winning entries.
  • A format for clearly defining the rules and parameters of each challenge AND general CSS Challenge rules.
  • A way to feature the winner’s entry in the individual challenge thread.
  • A place for users to submit challenge suggestions.

Other ideas / suggestions?

The CSS Challenge Hall of Fame

Should the host/challenger select the final winner, or should it be determined solely by votes?

Both? Maybe a "People's Choice" and a "Judge's Award" are in order?

Cool stuff all around. All of this stuff should be do-able in time.

I'll work with this list to see will make the first cut.

Something to start thinking about as well: what will all of the challenges be? Usually that's where these challenges fall apart (i.e. they lose steam 5 weeks in due to the lack of good ideas).

As far as judging goes, you guys should be 2 stable judges, and we should see if we can't get in a few celebrity judges from time to time :)

Celebrity judges = yes! Jennifer Love Hewitt? Meredith Baxter Birney? Rupaul!

For challenge ideas, maybe we could create the majority of that list up front through some brainstorming (much like we are here). I also typically come up with ideas when working on projects, and I have a few running right now. I could also revisit some recent projects that presented some real challenges, like Discover.typography or A Memoir Project.

Either way, I personally work best with a deadline. When would you like to have at least a decent starter list of challenges?

Also, This. Is. Fun. Thank you for the invite!

Just added a new idea to the list above: “A place for users to submit challenge suggestions.”

Cool. Let's aim to come up with some ideas by Jan. 30 and see where we stand there. I'll try my hand at coming up with a few.

Heya Kelly,

So sorry about the delay. Let me know if it's too late. Otherwise I'm working on a starter list that I hope to have posted soon. Something that could at least get us a couple of months of challenges.
