i experienced this dream from a first person, but am describing it as a game for more clarity and possible use
i think main inspirations are space station 13, metroid fusion, and SCP
normally games have a setting where the character is a messiah or very powerful.
this is a setting where the player is weak and clueless among peers who completely outclass them.
the player was able to enter as a graduate-student, due to economic recession causing layoffs of higher paid personell in favor of cheaper labor, the hiring department being the least competent division, and the player being a talented liar.
there is a tutorial provided via lectures and briefings, but it all assumes prerequisite knowledge the player doesnt have. most of the challenge is figuring out the missing base knowledge to apply the teaching of the lectures.
objectives, in descending priority
brag about your career.
get paid. | |
dont associate with thoughtcrimes.
be a sycophant. | |
avoid blame for accidents you cause.
extra objectives, *not expected*
follow safety procedures accurately.
dont die. | |
maintain sanity after theologic exposures.
meritable workplace contribution.
any degree of academic accomplishment.
the facility is a research lab, with tech level about +200 years of modern tech, except there is alchemy, sorcery, and artefacts, among and as parts of the computers and robotics.
the lab aims to study dangerous magics which would be too hazardous to experiment with in other conditions.
the outside of the lab is unknown from the player perspective, presumably not on earth, hints are contradictory whether its planetary, orbital, or benthic.
the lab is 3 floors, seperated by dense armor. transited by a single high capacity elevator.
architecture | |
metallic brutalism, rectangular base shapes with ramps between varied elevation platforms, contrasted with unorganized labs and improv prototypes.
most areas are built to accomodate mech scale, causing a surplus of available space for humans.
gantries and walkways are smoothly incorporated into the rooms, allowing for plenty of wide angle views
reference- gundam, tsutomu nihei, metroid fusion
each floor has a critical system, interdependent on the 2 others, if there is any significant failure the entire facility halts operation and responds.
floor 1 - nexus | |
central compute | |
only algorithms and sane AIs are allowed
miscellaneous subfacilities
quarters and lecture halls
visitors allowed with clearance
power armor and mechs are not allowed in the cafeteria
armory and barracks | |
police | |
2 standard hostile-occupation squads
inquisitors are covert, balanced among all staff at "average" ratio
mechs | |
anti biological - 3 medium, 9 small
anti armor - 2 light small
dedicated military is not to be issued exotic devices of any sort
previous incidents have deemed unpredictable interference risk too high
inquisition is not exempt
civilians | |
researchers may | |
carry exotic arms with approval from supervisors
wear any degree of personal armor and smallarms at their discretion
staff must not leave any arms unattended outside of quarters of armory
unapproved staff have equipment reserved in armory for call to arms
pets | |
pets are only available whatsoever due to union demand
sapients and slaves are not allowed
any pets outside of containment or quarters will be immolated immediately, with zero tolerance
sentients and subhumans are not exempt from immolation, their presence at the facility is strongly discouraged
pets kept in quarters must be interrogated by police once per week
interrogation failure will result in immediate immolation
floor 2 - power | |
no research allowed on this floor, infrastructure only
central entropy supply
a nested gyroscopic hyperlens assembly. operation requires solving a continually changing system with an unbounded degree of goedel-incompleteness. it cannot be operated by any singular known algorithm, requiring highly attentive sapient operators to continually make Nth-order meta-algorithms according to its current state.
failure modes - one of 3 possible cascades which cannot be recovered from.
zero- device shutdown, power is lost. operators always steer a cascade towards this mode.
negative- dark meltdown, exposed baryonic and theoonic matter would be frozen, highest danger is medium exposure, where frozen organics dont vitrify and cannot be thawed
positive- classical plasma meltdown. if inevitable, operators must maximise output to ensure thorough destruction of dangerous subjects
imaginary- plausible in theory. outcome entirely unknown. observation of imaginary failure mode is not an objective of this facility.
possession | |
2 operators with benign possession
1 operator possessed by benevolent angel
for synthesis of divine algorithms, only under exceptional circumstances requiring it
supervision | |
1 synthetic priest | |
1 idyllic-neurotypical human ethicist
psychotropics - no more than half of human operators
coolant organs, maximum grade
radiator interface | |
experimental thermophysics are strictly no longer allowed on this floor
floor 3 - noumena | |
enchanting circuit which utilizes a malignant demon
2^16 nano monks | |
difficult to recall, the whole "dont lose sanity" part |
