Title of Application
Systems for eSports Society - Project
What do you need and why?
The core of the eSports society is to encourage and facilitate the growth of electronic sports within the university. This constitutes around developing a welcoming environment that allows new and experienced players to participate in both social and competitive activities. In order to achieve this goal, the society requires systems capable of running software at a satisfactory level, in particular; League of Legends, Counter Strike Global Offensive, Hearthstone, Defense of the Ancients 2, Open Broadcasting Software, Video Editing, etc.
We have sought these systems through alternative channels, but have been unable to, due to our requirement of fitting a discrete graphics processing unit. We were, however, able to obtain monitors, mice, keyboards, Ethernet cables and other essential peripherals. Using the expertise of the committee members, whom have built systems of this calibre and above in the past, we have chosen the following components based on price to performance ratio. Further to this, we have considered the longevity of these systems so that future eSports Society generations can depend on these. We have calculated the lifespan of these system should be no shorter than 5 years. Based on all teams utilising the systems, we have estimated that cumulatively they will be used for more than 3500 hours during their lifespan, yielding an average hourly cost of £0.11 per hour per system. Calculations for this can be found on our website at http://esports.susu.org/computerbudget .
We have chosen the route of self-assembly due to two distinct advantages. The first being a significant reduction in price compared to pre-built systems with equal performance. The second is the ability to run a system building seminar that will be recorded as educational content freely available to the university and its societies. Due to their modular assembly, when the systems are no longer able to perform, the society will only be required to replace singular components rather than the entire system.
A total of 5 systems are requested to serve the standard team size. The systems will be used for things such as; local/internal tournaments, representing the university at external tournaments, training newer members, hosting social gatherings and viewing parties, supporting promotional activities for the society/university, broadcasting our activities, eliminating financial disadvantages for less fortunate students and reducing the liability of members' personal equipment. These systems will be the corner stone of our society, allowing all members to participate regardless of circumstances. We currently have 125 members directly involved in weekly external and internal tournaments, all of whom would greatly benefit from having these types of capabilities available to them.
Motherboard - MSI 970A-G43 ATX AM3+
This motherboard has the lowest cost whilst being compatible with chosen central processing unit and providing the minimum number of expansion ports needed.
Central Processing Unit - AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core
The best price to performance ratio, capable of handling the highly intense computational tasks that the society requires.
Random Access Memory - Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Cheapest RAM available that meets our minimum requirements.
Graphical Processing Unit - EVGA GeForce GTX 950 2GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0
Although the most expensive component, this piece will be performing the vast majority of the heavy computation and thus the most important component of the build. It has been chosen as the cheapest option that is able to meet the minimum benchmark for all society requirements.
Hard Disk Drive - Toshiba 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal
Sufficient in performance and size allowing it to accommodate storage for the essentials.
Power Supply Unit - EVGA 500W 80+ Certified ATX
We have estimated that the components used will utilise ~400W. This was both the cheapest option and allows us additional wattage for a safety buffer.
Case - BitFenix Comrade ATX Mid Tower Case
Cheapest case that will fit all the desired components.
Although this application contains multiple components, due to the very nature of a computer system, without all these our systems will not function. Therefore, a complete inclusion of all listed components would constitute to a single item.
